iPod v MP3 player

I could get them to fight to decide which is best but would appreciate the views of the NSC technocrats as to what a basice iPod (shuffle) does that that a MP3 player of similar prices doesn't.

Eldest has Christmas money burning a hole in her piggy bank and is desparate for an iPod despite having a cheap and cheerful MP3 player that she rarely uses!

I always prefer my MP3 player, I tried an iPod once but didn't really get along with it. It depends entirely what she would be using it for. My mp3 player is much cheaper and does more than I need it to, there would be no point in splashing out on an iPod which does even more than I wouldn't need.
