Good morning all, going to Milan in a few hours and need to know which settings need to be altered to avoid any silly charges!
Cheers

Ring your service provider and tell them you are going for a start, they may be able to advise you. Other than that, DON'T USE IT you will be stung to buggery with data charges

Settings- General - turn off 'enable 3G' and 'data roaming.' Don't try to connect to the internet unless you see the wifi symbol at the top of the screen.

I presume with these settings changed i'll be able to use the camera etc without any 'location' services operating?
Cheers

Speak to your provider about how to turn off your voicemail as this is treated by some providers as receiving calls. You don't want to pay to receive messages whilst you are away. I am with Vodafone and its very simple to deactivate then Reactivate upon your return.

Have a great trip

Do you need to be able to make and recieve calls or texts while in Italy? If you don't you could put the phone into airplane mode as this will turn off all wireless activity on the phone. You can turn wi-fi and bluetooth back on if you need to. Say you are in a wireless hotspot or the hotel has free wi-fi internet.

I travel abroad regularly with an iphone... Just make sure data roaming is turned off in settings and you will be fine.... If you do attempt to access anything to do with data, a warning re-charges will flash up..

Safe journey, good luck.

As said, just need to ensure data roaming is turned off. Plus turn off your answerphone before leaving the country and don't reactivate it until you get home (otherwise you get charged for people leaving messages as well as you then picking them up).

Location services uses a mixture of GPS, cellular and Wifi to determine your position - if you have data roaming switched off it will simply use GPS and wifi (if there is access) so there's nothing to worry about there. (GPS itself does not incur any usage charge and will still work).

Other than that, just search for open wifi points whenever you're in cafes and bars and the like.

Piggy backing off this thread, does anyone know whether iMessage can work over wifi if you are connected and send a text to another iMessage user?

Im going to Florida next week and was wondering if I can send a text to other iPad/iPhone (with ios5) without being charged international text rates?

Doesn't the iMessage system use wi-fi if avaliable but will use 3g if not so you could still be charged for sending messages with it? That's my understanding of it anyway I haven't yet upgraded to ios5 on my iPhone.

Download hullomail and use it to divert all calls while you're away. Then just switch off your phone unless you're in a wifi zone. You'll get your voicemails emailed to you so you'll be able to listen to them for free over wifi...

Also, download the Skype app. Then, in your wifi zone, ring people using that. Unless they're on Skype too you'll need to put a bit of credit on there but the cost per minute for phoning a foreign landline is tiny compared to the normal cost.

If other people you know don't have iOS 5 you might want to use whatsapp it's a cheap app that uses wifi to send messages and pictures. I use this while abroad its a great app as its also available to those with blackberries.
