Theres an App called Ringtones which is very good.
There is a free version, which is ok, but if you pay a few bob you can get the better version.

When you use it, you can chop out any part of a song and use it as a ringtone.

Try the free version and if you like it, bish bash bosh. JOB DONE MY SON

If it's the same as the 3gs you can capture the sample using the iphone software but after you store it you need to go back and change the file from a by putting an r in front of it. then save it again and install. I can't remember what format they use of hand but for example: change a .wav file to a .rwav and store it. That's what I did for my ring-tone.

Here is what I do (As all my songs are MP3 anyway).

1) Copy the MP3 to the desktop that I want as part of a ringtone
2) Using appropriate editing software (I use Audacity) to chop out NO MORE than 40 seconds.
3) Resave MP3
4) Import into iTunes
5) Using iTunes convert said MP3 into AAC
6) Rename file from .m4a to .m4r
7) Reimport into iTunes and it appears as a ringtone.

Used to do exactly as above but now have splashed out a massive 59p and bought the ringtones app mentioned above and it does all this for you. Just watch the instruction video that comes with the app for the full setup.
