Twitter going bonkers over what time it will be released. Depending on who you believe 3pm or 6pm (GMT) seem to be the favorites.

I wish Apple weren't always so bloody secretive! I've been checking every hour, just after the hour to see if it's been released.

Thanks for the 3/6pm info, - I can get on with some work instead!

I will update mine, but why the hurry, does it matter if you do it today , or tomorrow, or even next week ?

Why the secrecy and hype? It's not as if the update is anything more than what's been available on other types of phone for years. (And I speak as an iPhone owner!)

The thing is that apple don't want 4 trillion people all downloading it at the same time... if they come out and say it will be out at 3pm... everyone will be sat at their desks ready.. I guess it'll lighten the load a little.

I can't wait anyway... i'm going to send a media message to all of the smug gits who think their stupid nokia bricks are better phones...

It's a bit of a faff for me to update so I wanted to get it over and done with. My work machine runs 64bit XP and I'm running ubuntu at home - neither of which iTunes support. So I have to use an old machine that is still running 32-bit XP at work.

Why? Everything is in place, all the CDN's who are distributing the patch have had the update since last week?

iPhone OS still due later today

International Date Line causes confusion

Despite reports to the contrary, including in our own pages, the iPhone update to version 3 will be available today. The confusion stemmed from a Singapore web site whose customers live on the other side of the International Date Line.

By the time eager iPhone users in Europe and the US are downloading the 298MB firmware, those in Singapore will already be waking up on Thursday morning and ready to join the fray. The dates are clearly indicated on the Singapore version of the update web site, which misled so many (including ourselves) with its diminutive country indicator in the URL.

Thanks to the readers who pointed out our mistake.

There were some links floating around the internet to a direct image of the new OS, though the fact that they have swiftly disappeared would seem to indicate Apple isn't keen for impatient users to bypass the iTunes update process.

So by this evening, iPhone users will be able to flaunt their new functionality, even if it will be a while before US users get access to the MMS and tethering functionality that AT&T has yet to support. ®

Humph. So the download will be made available when most of the Western World is awake, which will put just a little pressure on their servers!

I would have thought they could have spread the load by making the download available at 8:00 GMT, so that the Eurozone could get their upgrade downloaded before the US wakes up. (I just know what the corporate reply to this will be !)

It'll be fine, they, like most people outsource all their distribution to other companies who specialise in it, the people hosting it are the same that host Windows updates etc and they seem to cope fine for me!

why do even care? can't it wait a day or a week? will it change your life? (think carefully before answering that).
