I owned an Android device once (Sony) and the user experience was absolutely terrible.

Conversely, I've owned Android devices since 2010, but have an iPhone for work, and find *that* user experience dreadful. It's just so unintuitive.

N.B. my last two Android phones have been Google Pixels and thus the most 'plain' Android experience unencumbered with 3rd-party (Sony) cruft.

I suggest that both OS are highly intuitive when you are using them regularly day in, day out but when something is not your "daily driver" it's a little less so and, as largely creatures of habit, we are drawn to the familiar and comfortable.

I'd like to consider myself pretty tech literate, but when I was last working with an app development company and was given a few Android phones (include a Pixel and a Samsung something) to test some apps with, I didn't have a ****ing clue how to do anything. I hated the whole experience every time I had to fire one of them up.

I wouldn't begin to claim that meant Android was dreadful though as, like iOS, it's used by hundreds of millions of people painlessly every single day.

I'm still on a 6s, but it's starting to really struggle with normal tasks. Battery is absolutely shot and it locks up about 20 times a day - just trying to read an email or reply to a text. I suppose I'll try and hold off a bit longer and then upgrade. I'm really not interested in having the latest device when it actually gives me no functional difference. Although I do appreciate lots of people use the devices far deeper than I do.

It's also doing that thing where if you have a charger plugged in, the touchscreen stops responding reliably. Exactly the same thing happened to my previous iPhone 4s, and I eventually had no option but to update.

The battery is not that hard to change in an iPhone 6S. £49 if you do it though Apple, under £25 if you get one and do it yourself.

Been out of the loop with Apple for a few years now.

Have they switched to USB-C yet?
Do they supply a proper fast-charger instead of the 5w mini plug?
Has their battery-life improved?
I remember my iPhone's would routinely slow down quite dramatically a year or so after I'd bought them, even without having many intensive apps installed.

The upcoming smaller 12 looks quite nice.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro, moved from iPhone 8s.

It does have USB-C and a faster charger.

The battery life is imo dramatically better. I used to have to charge my phone during the day but no longer need to and it rarely drops below 50% charge.

I've had it for 7 months and no change yet in performance yet but still early days.

Doesn't sound like you'll be disappointed with what you're getting:

I filmed 4K videos in broad daylight and at night walking around London and indoors, and was blown away by how smooth and natural-looking the resulting footage was. Shooting a squirrel eating nuts on a fence perfectly captured the colour gradients of its fur and the way the tail blew in the breeze, zooming and panning in a clean and natural manner. It also refocuses automatically and copes well in artificial light and in the dark. I’m no videographer, but the iPhone Pro 12’s camera set up is so impressive I found myself trying to track down interesting stuff specifically to film.

Shooting a bike ride around a park (holding the bike in my hand) in 4K 30fps (frames per second) demonstrated how smooth the handling is, even when rolling over bumpy ground, handling shifts in light quality and auto-focuses as it shoots. Colours are vivid and sharp, textures are clear. Recording a swan stretching its wing highlighted the subtle light reflected off the water and on to the outstretched feathers without oversaturation. The clarity of the Pro camera while recording video is breathtaking.​

Had two batteries replaced by Apple on my 8 and daughters 6s last year. Both times something went wrong when replacing the battery.
Both times Apple gave a replacement new phone without asking (same model). I only had to pay for the battery cost.

6s was a good phone, still have mine and it's fine, but it's time for a family run of hand-me-downs. Was the XR are good upgrade? I was tossing up between the 8 plus and the XR.

Yes - much faster, and at least double the battery life. Has face recognition too - initially I thought that'd be a gimmick, but I've grown to appreciate it. Not as much camera stuff as the other X- sub letter, but I hardly use my phone for photos that I want to keep anyway - I use my DSLR for those. I went for the 128GB option - plenty for me.

Got a new one and a sim-only deal. £575 from memory - was a special offer at the time. Might be cheaper now?

My last iPhone was the 7.
I have had a brief flirtation with Android (galaxy s9 plus) but got notification today that I’m due an upgrade.
I’ve gone back to iPhone and am awaiting the 12 pro 128gb, should be here shortly

Is that your iPad that's on its way out or do you mean it's on its way out of Apple's product line? My current iPad is on its last legs.

My iPad..... the battery life is shot to shit. There is a feature on the latest iOS on the phone that tells you what the battery capacity is which is handy, but this feature in not on the iOS for iPad

Some interesting sizing specs now.
On the Apple Store App there is a nice “Compare” function where you can compare two different phones (old and new).
So the iPhone mini (5.4” screen) is comparable in form factor to the iPhone 8 (4.7” screen). The iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7” screen) is comparable to the iPhone 7/8 Plus (5.5” screen).

After several years of loyal service from an iPhone 6, it never recovered from a big drop earlier this year, so I replaced it with an iPhone 11. Love it, excellent screen, long battery life and a great camera. I’ll stick with this now for many years (hopefully).
