"Other Year" being prior to 1981 when they got rid of wooden carraiges clearly

Nope it was 99 or 00 I think might have even been more recent than that. It was when the Albion played out there (year before battle of Longford).

Definately a wooden carraige, definately a goat in it, certainly people smoking and I'm pretty sure there was one a day or something daft. We got the same train back which stopped in Athlone (sp?) for our game there. I seem to recall going in a pub where the IRA was formed or used to have meeting.

Mr Blobby will back me up if you think I'm fibbing as he and the Fatty Taxman were with me.

And unlike the UK train system, we haven't had a fatal train crash since 1981.

Er, I would have thought you probably have a few less trains running as well.

Not, erm, 200 dead divided by 0 less :jester:

Or indeed, anything near 200 times less. Proportionally its safer

Arthur - methinks you may have partaken of a few too many of the funny Guinness's they serve to tourists in Galway. A sod of turf liquidised with cream on top may look the same but it can cause some interesting hallucinations :p

Was that the trip the Cardinal managed 12 dumps on the journey between Dublin and Galway?

It was worse than that. It was between Galway and Althone, about 1.5 hours.

We got to Athlone and walked in the first pub we came across, it was like something out of a Western (darts stopping in mid air, that sort of thing) Pete strolls straight in to the bog for as he describes it a 'loud fart'.

Fantastic trip!

I think that one was 2000.

I went to the first one in 1999 and the Battle of Longford in 2001, but missed that trip.

Righto, what ever you say. That must of been it, I must have imagined the whole thing! The Albion have never been on tour to Ireland and therefore I've never experienced the delights of the Irish rail network.

I have to say I am with Arthur on this one.

We got the train from Dublin to Longford in 2001 and it was an old wreck. Looked like all the rolling stock we did not want here 15 years ago, with those dodgy hatch as a buffet window.

Still it got us there.

Dublin->Longford is along my line, that stuff rusted to pieces about three years ago, hence the new stuff. Its not wooden and it wouldn't have had goats on it. The toilets could stand up to turbo-dumping though, the new ones would have overflowed by Enfield :p

Ref'ed by an amateur league ref, in a half finished stadium in the middle of nowhere. First game in the stadium too I think, doubt they want to put that on official records though

What he said.

Overnight trains might be "tortuous" - but that's only in comparison with fast, daytime trains. The whole point is to plan a journey so that you arrive where you want to be round about breakfast time. If that means kipping on a train that's travelling at 30 mph, what's the problem? A 6.30am breakfast at Warsaw station is the perfect way to arrive in a country you've never been before.

What he said with added bells and whistles.

(or polite whispers of love and affection if at Withdean)

A handy tip. Book seats as soon as possible. Standing in a corridor for 13 hours with a day of sightseeing in front of you is not reccomended in any guide books
