Evening all (anyone).

I have bought a NetGear wireless router so I am not inundated with cables etc. The stuff seems to install perfectly and the signal is strong, but it does not pick up the Virgin Media Broadband. Any ideas?

NB I am a bit of a technophobe.

No prizes in guessing what the first bit of advice you're going to get is....

I have NTL/Vrigin and sometimes have to go into the wireless router setings to make sure the 'DHCP' client is connected ok..

Ahhhh yes we have exactly the same one, and when you turn it on the little light that shows you have an internet connection doesn't come on.....I moved it to the phone line upstairs and voila - connection worked, tried it back downstairs on the other phone connection and nothing....

Change phone lines if you can?

My wife kept moaning about a similar problem, a good smack cured it. It worked for the router too.

I may be barking up completely the wrong tree here, but is it the right kind of router? You can get DSL ones and ADSL ones, the difference being that DSL is cable and ADSL through a phone line. Obviously therefore you're going to need a DSL one, or it's not going to work.

Virgin Ridiculous broadband comes up a co-ax cable with the TV signals. That's why it is so much quicker.

You either use the set top box - this has an RJ45 Ethernet socket that connects to the WAN port of a wireless router or a little modem thingy they give you that connects to the co-ax on one side and the WAN port of your router on the other. You just have to set everything to use DHCP ,switch it on and off a few times, yes really, and it should work.

Cheers all.

I have been doing a bit of reading on the website (Thanks Bluejuice) and tinkering with all the suggestions. I still can't figure out how to sort it out, so a professional will be called (a neighbour is an IT consultant)!

Even if it doesn't work, the flashing blue light in the centre of the box adds something to the room and is rather funky.
