That map is completely arse upwards. Those figures must be "%age of people who are NOT vegetarian", not vice versa. In the southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, almost everyone is vegetarian. And it's the northern states where there's a much higher proportion of Muslims to Hindus that (more) people do eat meat.

Yes. 100% sure. Doesn't look like that article writer bothered researching in the south. Although it is true Gujarat has a strong vegetarian reputation. But Punjab is more tandoori based.

I spent 5 months backpacking in India. Outside of the tourist restaurants I only saw meat on the menu once in around two months in the south. It's all masala dosai, idli sambar and 'Meals' (all-you-can-eat veggie curries, often referred to as thali in the UK)

(Overheard in a restaurant in Trichy, an American tourist walking in with a desperate look on his face: "Do you have any meat?" Waiter: "I am sorry sir. Here, everyone is vegetarian.")

The data comes from the National Family Health Survey, which you can access here

I've also spent a fair amount of time in India (from Kashmir to Kerala). I think you're forgetting the amount of fish eaten in coastal regions

I was at the opening of the first MacDonalds in India in Mumbai in 95 or 96. Not sure what they were selling counted as meat, to be fair.

Whatever, I stand by my own observations. A few (even a few million) coastal fishermen are not going to turn a traditionally Hindu vegetarian state like Tamil Nadu into 97.7% flesh eaters, as that map claims. (Or Muslim dominated northern areas into veggies come to that.)

It simply does not compute...

The only way it could even remotely make sense is if they are only surveying the new middle class metropolitan elite, and completely ignoring the 1 billion or so Indians who remain impoverished and mostly unable to afford to eat meat even if they wanted to.

So what you mean is you're going to ignore evidence and just go with your firsthand knowledge. Fair enough.

To be honest, I shared it as it was surprising (not the north south split but the low percentage of veggies in the south in general) but all sources seem to back it up.
