I had one with Abbey National back in the 1990s, last time I used it was in Jan 1999...since then I'd forgotten about it and only just found the booklet at the back of a drawer in the doug LOFT with £3.19...

zero - your account has been dormant for too long. Even if you have the passbook, the records will have been deleted and all they will say is that the account must have been closed sometime between then and now.

My mother in law had a building society passbook with £600 in it. Her local branch in Hangleton closed and all the records moved to a branch in Hove. The account became dormant and when she passed away our solicitor asked for the funds. All the records in the Hove branch had been transferred to computerised records nationally which were then deleted after 7 years. The building society in question told our solicitor they couldn't find any details and advised that the account must have been closed when the branch in Hangleton was still operational. The funny thing was that the passbook had been kept in a box file in a strong-room at the solicitors office in Worthing along with other financial and legal documents which is why it became dormant in the first place.

Nothing - inactive accounts over 5 years are closed (or some such length of time I can't remember)...

Ha, I once worked at the Alliance Building Society. Someone's whose mother had died presented an old passbook that hadn't been updated since 1965 or 66. I had to calculate 15 years' interest (as well as converting from old money to new). We had no computers to do this, so I had to do it all manually. Took me all day.

I wished that inactive account had been closed.

WINNER, the account is STILL OPEN with £3.31p with a grand total of 12p interest....WOW

All I gotta do is contact Abbey again and get a new booklet sent through the post with updated details...then I might actually use the account!

I had an Italian account opened in my name when I was born. I have never accessed the account. I think the bank has changed it's name, and the national currency has converted to the Euro. I don't know who opened the account, or if they're even alive. I doubt I will ever be able to get the money.

No wonder Banks and Building Societies make ten squillion pound a minute, the are effectively STEALING people's money.
