Indie challenge number two: I will ask Dave Pajo about the songs "Arundel" and "I am not alone with cricket" from the first Papa M album. Specifically, was the first one written after a visit to the picturesque West Sussex hilltop town (the song certainly has a majestic vibe redolent of that imposing view), and, if so, is his song about cricket related to this visit? I enjoy US indie types alluding to the game of cricket in songs - notably Pavement's Carrot Rope "the wicketkeeper's down", accompanied in the video by the mime of a straightish on drive by Stephen Malkmus.

The Papa himself, Dave Pajo, has now replied. However, Dave is a man of few words. I asked him whether his song Arundel was connected to our lovely Arundel, and he just said "Yes it is." I don't want to badger him - he must be busy with the Slint reunion - so I won't ask for further details, given that he didn't proffer any in his reply. I'm just glad our county made such an impression on him. Maybe he'll write a song about Hawkstone Park one day, Staly?

Did we ever get round to properly doing 'half decent indie bands who chased the £ and turned into something shit instead'?

Boy did I get a lot of Soup Dragons* in my youth.

*I was going to use SD but that didn't look good.

Whole Wide World and Hang 10 are lovely. I think they slowly got shitter until I'm Free and beyond. Apparently the singer is now enjoying himself cruising on steroids (possibly, so someone told me - if that's wrong I apologise).

I've always hated it at the end of Hang Ten when the singer says "Can I get a video engineer now?" (I think this is what he's saying anyway). Almost spoils the song for me. By and large, I'm not a fan of jokey endings or beginnings, which is curious, because I generally like a laugh. I can just about accept "This is a William Shatner number" (much to the relief of Shaun RC, I'm sure). Can't be doing with Sharon van Etten's "My headphones just fell off" and LOATHE the vomiting at the end of Ash's 1977 (who wouldn't?). I never bought I'm Free, but I distinctly remember being quite happy if it was played at a non-indie disco. Slim pickings. Made a change from Stock, Aitken and Waterman.

Party pooper. What about James squealing "Lester Piggott!" repetitively at the end of Sit Down original 12"?

(Weirdly I don't remember the engineer bit at the end of hang 10. I'll play it tonight)

Even when I liked James, I thought Tim was an irritant. I could list more end-laughing I don't like - A Place For Parks by Mogwai is one. Actually, i don't mind the laughing at the end of You! Me! Dancing! by Los Campesinos! so much. Really dislike the sobbing in Suffer Little Children. Horrible melodrama; rest of the song's a bit dubious too. HOWEVER, I LOVE all of the giggling in The Laughing Gnome - always make me chuckle, although my wife gets angry at this song. Swings and roundabouts.

Here's the final few bands and full schedule for this year's Indietracks:

http://www.indietracks.co.uk/schedule/

61 bands - awesome. I'm particularly excited by Dorotea, then The Blue Minkies, followed by Joanna Gruesome on the Saturday. This threesome alone would make for a fantastic gig.

We're having the Come Again disco on the opening night - best not overdo the booze in the excitement beforehand or it'll be a set full of 1978 Wire demos and early US hardcore. Having said that, that does sound grrrreat!

I now have my (signed!) copy of the C86 reissue, which, of course, means Lawrence and the Comfortable Society, as well as Pigbros. Please let me know if anyone would like a copy.....

I have to ask- what does the Tallulah in 45 minutes workshop consist of? Totally intrigued.

Happy days.

Indietracks said:
Woo! We've just released a sizzling 55-track compilation featuring bands playing at this year’s Indietracks.

The compilation ranges from dancefloor fillers and punk pop assaults to electropop and acoustic folk. It includes well-known artists such as The Hidden Cameras, Dean Wareham, Allo Darlin’, The Chills, The Blue Minkies and Sweet Baboo, alongside the brightest new bands like Joanna Gruesome, The Spook School, Mega Emotion and TeenCanteen.

All proceeds will go to the Midland Railway steam railway charity where our festival takes place. The compilation costs a minimum of £2 to download, but extra donations will be very much appreciated by the railway.

To see the full tracklist and to download the album, please visit our Bandcamp page:

Don't really have a proposed setlist, because they invariably goes straight out of the window three songs in when your andrenalin and booze-fuelled mind suddenly decides that Razorcuts would sit more easily after The Fireworks than Kleenex. Or something.

I'm really trying to limit myself to songs which are three minutes or less so that no-one starts flagging if they finally hit the floor for a shuffle, and we can squeeze more tunes in. Will post up what we played after the event though.

Listened to all 3 CDs of the C86 reissue / expansion yesterday (thanks @tiny cowboy ).

Some great stuff. Some 'interesting' calls on what constitutes 'C86'.

Right now, listening to the Wheat album. Promising

I saw them 5 times in Brighton back in the 80's and 90's. The last gig was to promote the Sunburnt LP and was pretty sparsely attended. I went home feeling a bit sad.

Looking at your avatar, I remember buying tickets three times to see The Chameleons, and every time they cancelled. Then, when they finally did play Brighton, I was up visiting friends at Lancaster uni. Managed to see them play just once, at a huge home-town gig at Middleton Town Hall. I must dig out some of their stuff again.
