Most amazing place I have ever lived in. Rich history, amazing people, great culture, superb food - just takes a while to get used to the cows in the street, priests pissing in the gutter! I want to move out there in a couple of years to set up a business - massive potential.

It is an amazing place. Holidayed in India on a number of occaisions when I lived in Bangladesh ( just a hop over the border ) as a child and still have very fond memories ( of India and Banladesh ).

I think that at the moment but yesterday I loved it. No doubt tomorrow that will change again. Seems to be the way it goes.
Definitely not the place for a relaxing holiday!

The dirtiest place I have ever been, by a mile. Total squalor and very little natural beauty.

Agree with the first bit, not the second, I've seen lots of natural beauty.
Haven't found that about the people either, they're OK (seriously frustrating at times) but definitely not the nicest I've met. And that nodding/shaky head thing makes me want to attack them for some reason.

Occasionally I would see a nice field or something, and then there would be a burnt-out car in the middle of it. Or a massive pile of shit. Or a rabied dog. Or a rabied dog doing a massive shit onto a burnt-out car. Always spoilt the scene a little for me.
With regards the people, perhaps it depends on the nature of your trip. When I stayed out there, I lived with a family (of several generations) in a big house with about 12 people in. They would have wiped my arse for me if I'd let them......

but the best thing is the people , so firendly and welcoming and interesting. yeh the shop / beach sellers want your cash as they do in many countries ie turkey / egypt etc but do they hassle you as much ? no they dont, even though they are more skint. cos they have more class.
im sure the cities are a bit grim but then so are parts of london , manchester , birmingham and what about croydon/thornton heath.
when its time to plan a holiday its india, sri lanka thailand vietnam before any turkey, spain egypt bollocks

Absolutely mad place, the sheer size and number of people hits you as soon as you get off the plane, the chaos when you walk out of an airport or a railway station where people are literally falling over each other to tout their services as taxi drivers or guides... It was mayhem.

Very little natural beauty? Did you stay in Mumbai the whole time then, cos there are places from the Himalaya's to Kerala that are absolutely stunning.

Not sure what you would describe as beautiful but I can't believe you think that.
It is a fantastic country full of very kind people most of whom are scrapeing an existance but who would give you half of their meal if you asked. The scenery in alot of the country is breathtaking, maybe you were just unlucky. Where else can you cross a road and have to avoid, cars, lorries, bikes, motorbikes, cows, and elephants?
The sad thing is that they want what we have in the West and that will gradually destroy the country.

I flew into Shillong airport and then was driven around 40 minutes to the house I was staying in. I certainly didn't see any "beauty" - on the drive, or in the city. Perhaps I was unlucky.
