If a lot of traditional labour voters on NSC all write in the next couple of days to their labour candidate/MP and tell then their vote is lost because of this, it may make them ar least question Labour HQ.I'd like to know what Labour voters in Brighton and Worthing who use the A27 every day think about this.

But it is any worse than the bottleneck at Worthing, or the 437 roundabouts to get round Chichester? If you've taken the life decisions which mean you have to commute on that route every day, I reckon you've probably done so in resignation of being stuck in traffic a lot. I doubt there were too many who genuinely believed there would be an Arundel bypass soon which would make the journey all hunky dory
And I guess more to the point the environmental destruction and planning nightmare, meant that this was never going to happen anyway
That's the current road. The real problem lies at Crossbush if travelling East to West. West to East it's on the stretch into Arundel thanks to the same bit of single carriageway. As someone who used to commute this road daily I would question the idea of the extended bypass but a huge difference to commute time and certainly the air quality would be made by extending the dual carriageway to the Ford roundabout. Would still be a bit of a snarl up there but way better than the current shit show.Is this the one they were talking about building in the 1960s?
Edit: I though that was built years ago. Why do they need a new one? I remember having to drive right through the town to go west when I was a kid.

It is all a bit sad really. When I first took the road from Hove to Dover (school trip) I was struck by how odd it was there was no motorway, just single lane roads from town to village to town. And 55 years later nothing has changed. The A27 Bypass round the back of Hangleton all the way to Lancing college is great, and then it all reverts back to 1930s style. Sad. The English way. And now the South East is like a gangly teenager still wearing short trousers that don't fit. Not even our own short trousers, but hand-me-downs from our grandparents' generation. And there seems to be nothing that can be done about it. Nobody wants a New Road in their Back Yard. Trains? No chance. People have embraced 'no room' culture in an alternative reality that imagines we depopulate, and that (FFS) Stopping the Boats is the way to do this.That's the current road. At the end of the day the cost is probably not justified as there are other things a new government will want to spunk their money on.

We live in a world where fewer people commute to work (I've sat at home and attended three meetings today already) and that trend is going to increase. Fewer and fewer young people are learning to drive - even in the US! My kids are an example, neither of them (21 and 19) has the slightest interest in learning to drive, nor do many of their friends. At some point in the future, we'll have self-driving cars that will make better use of road space (probably not for at least 15 years).
In the meantime, any road improvements will be argued over, scrapped, reinstated and finally built. The Brighton bypass, first proposed in 1932 and whose draft plan was presented in 1980 was completed in 1995. I can't see any government planning a road for 15/20 years in the future, given current trends.
So LABOUR is going to 'scrap' the Arundel bypass, that the party in power for the previous FOURTEEN YEARS was definitely, absolutely desperate to crack on with 'delivering' at the earliest possible time?Well, 9 years on, Labour still won’t be delivering the Arundel bypass.

To be honest - and I am very much one of the people regularly inconvenienced by the bottlenecks - I don't see that a bypass at Arundel in isolation actually achieves anything to speed the overall journey times. I'm no expert on traffic flow, but my logic dictates that if x-thousand cars want to travel from Portsmouth to Brighton around the same time - each bottleneck slows the flow and releases the volume of cars at a steady rate, to hurtle off towards the next. If you somehow find a route for a dual carriageway from the White Swan to Crossbush, then the complete volume of cars (once released form the previous bottleneck at Chichester) just all hit the Worthing bottleneck in greater volume, and everyone sits there for longer.Tories won't do anything about it because it's not a vote winner for them - they're shoo-ins for Arundel so it won't make any difference to their electoral chances. £ is the bottom line here. The proposed Arundel bypass will be a lot more expensive than it was the last time it went before the consultation process. The Worthing bypass will never happen via any government as that is well over the 1billion mark now. Hmmm .... the record of B&H LABOUR on local potholes is dire. I live in a road of 27 houses that had at least a dozen pot holes. One day along came the contractors who started to fill in a hole right at the end of my drive. Mrs WS happened to come back while they were doing it and commented to one of the guys how good it would be to see all the pot holes filled. Response from the contractor ? "Sorry love - we're only allowed to fill in holes the council has told us to and that means we're only filling in two pot holes." - one they weren't allowed to fill because it wasn't on the list was one only ten inches from the one at the end of my drive !
