Lots of interesting places to see, we went to Dublin and it was fine despite a scary/hilarious (it's got funnier the further away from it we get) experience with the Viking Splash Tour (find out more at http://goireland.about.com/od/dublintours/gr/dublintours04.htm).

Basically it's an old wartime amphibious vehicle (or DUKW hence their nickname 'ducks') that takes you on a tour around the city before turning into a mini tug for a putter round the Grand Canal. Unfortunately, the year we went had seen a drought so the canal was at a low level. As a result, we got into it OK but struggled to get out - the duck had a run up and got halfway up the ramp with two wheels hanging out one side, and we then began to tip. Fortunately, the driver managed to reverse it back before we all got tipped out. One of the other ducks had to haul us out with a rope in the end. The parents were having kittens, while the kids were loving it, thinking it was all part of the plan ... :lolol:

We stayed in a really nice cottage near the Wicklow Mountains. Check out www.imagineireland.com

Must be about £5-6 a pint now. A lot of people rate Dublin, but I found it disappointig compared to Brighton (along with everywhere else in the uk, including Edinburgh!)

I just came back to England today from Ireland.

A 500ml bottle of Fat Coke cost €1.09
The same size bottle of Evian was €0.90

Ireland is beautiful, the NW coast especially :)

I think those prices are pretty much just the same as they are here. Those are from a local independent grocers, there is a Tesco in Letterkenny which is probably slightly cheaper.

Whoah, that's cheaper than here/.

Yeah, the countryside is beautiful, if that's what you're going for... but then consider Scotland, with the exchange rate as it as.

Oh and beer in the pub was about €4.45 (£3.90ish?) a pint, give or take. Dublin is nasty compared to the rest of the country.

I go because Ireland is home, I don't think Ireland is as expensive as a lot of people make it out to be. Anywhere can be expensive if you want it to be.

I went to Dublin last August, and I found there to be a lot to do and see.

I'm definitely planning on a return trip sometime.

Can of coke is 80c in vending machines most places, about the same in shops.

Dublin is tolerable, I'd advise taking the car or hiring out and getting out in to the country if you're going to come through Dublin. The Wicklow Mountains (30mins drive) have some spectacular scenery for starters.

Beer aside...don't even think about taking your mobile phone. I went 3 years ago (it may of changed since then) but you pay about £1.50 to send and even receive text messages. Mobile phone calls were about £10 a second !!

Shoppers from the Republic are crossing the border in massive numbers to do their big food shop in the north due to the exchange rate. It works out cheaper taking into consideration the petrol costs to load the car up with shopping than buying it locally. Asda in Enniskillen and Strabane get inundated at the weekend with customers from the Republic.

Must have roamed on the wrong network... our calls natively are cheaper here than the UK!

Either roam on to your own network if they're here (Vodafone, O2, Three) or force the phone on to Meteor; that will be the cheapest option by far. Theres EU maximum pricings now anyway, but Meteor are usually cheaper for roamees than that even.
