Nope.

He's had 'first touch' grumbles.
I feel not only is that a little harsh, but also he was always under pressure before he even touched the ball.
Plus the out ball wasn't always on.

Work rate, effort, and goals have never been in doubt. but now he'll have a team around him.

Lets hope your right.

He definitely has a better squad around him now which will definitely help him especially as he may now actually spend more time in the right areas. First touch and finishing require improvement then we may see the goals.

I agree. Its funny you should start this thread as I was only thinking this last night.

I was a bit bored watching the diving so I watched all of our goals last season on the lap top. He and we obviously started the season quite well and his goals dried up when we started struggling which is natural and he obviously suffered losing some confidence.

We all know his attitude and commitment are fantastic but you only need to watch the two goals he scored against Leeds to see that he is a quality striker also. The control and finish for the first goal were outstanding and his second was a brilliant, clever strikers run to make space and the same with his goal against Palace. Add in the excellent finishes against Sunderland and Derby and he did score some excellent goals aswell as a couple of scrappy ones.

I know he missed a few sitters but he's had a full season playing in and learning our system now which can only help. And with more chances created this season from a better and hopefully fully fit midfield and defence plus his confidence restored I really do think he will score a lot of goals.

To be honest, its less about the service, less about his ability. Last seadon he did get service despite popukar opionion and he is a good player too. He is clearly going through a crisis of confidence. You can see it because he's doubting himself and taking 1 or 2 seconds longer to think about his decisions.

Easier said than done but I'm certain that a confident CMS would be a force in this division like he was in the first hslf of last season.

If he's improved his woeful first touch then he'll do much better, with the additional service.

Pork pie land.
I fully expect there to be some humble pie eating, from people on this board, re CMS.
It's occurred to me I'm spreading myself to thinly when it comes to ramming peoples words back down their throats.
So I'm putting my summer of CMS defence into one thread.

- He'll have more poacher balls across the 6 yard box, from Buckley, KLL, Noone.
- He'll have Crofts and Vicente in close company.
- Centre halves will be pulled out of position.
- The team have now had a full season in The Championship.

- Last season he was completely detached from our defensive set up.
- Last season he was having to chase down 60 yard lumps up field from Greer.

CMS will be our top scorer, knocking on the door of 20+ goals, without taking a penalty.

I take it in the time I've taken to write this CMS has been sold to Palace.
I am also acutely aware that writing this means Mystic Stat is hammering the final nail into CMS' football coffin, sorry fella.

Very apt that it was you who started this thread, as I would be happy to see CMS on his bike! Simply not good enough for the Championship as he has now proved twice, with two different teams. The only "business" I can see him involved in is transfer business i'm afraid.

I am totally with the OP on this, based on two things.

1) I believe CMS is a natural goal scorer and players like him will score wherever they play and

2) He is scores plenty on my Football Manager game playing either up front on his own or with Hoskins (in the case of my game) and FM very rarely ever gets it wrong.

Probably the worst signing we've ever made, 2.5m wasted we might have got play-offs if only we bought a striker worth 2.5m

How many easy chances and shit first touches has he had

One of the quirks of NSC is the ebb and flow of general, or at least expressed general opinion. The flow on CMS has been interesting, from the excitement of his signing, to the gradual turn on him during his drought, to the blame being put on service to him, to needing to trade him for mccormack to not wanting to, to how awful he is and hos he just runs around a lot, and now back to this.

It seems if you start a thread about CMS, whatever you say, good or bad, you will get almost unanimous agreement. Or are we all changing our minds so often in unison?

I'd love to see him have a storming season and banging in something over 15 goals to justify his value to the doubters.
I am absolutely certain he has the ability to do it.

I just hope it will be us he does it for :(

I just think that people do not want to face up to the fact he was a bad buy. It is easy to see why Posh were prepared to let him go despite gaining promotion, and why the big Premiership clubs did not sign him.

If he did, he would still not have made a sufficient ROI and be behind Ashley Barnes.

I think I agree with that (not least because I am a big Ashley Barnes fan ).

I am absolutely certain CMS has the ability to score goals at this level and I love the guy for his attitude (as much off the pitch as on). I think he is a fantastic ambassador for the club.
Unfortunately I don't think he is well suited to our style of play and certainly not to playing as the lone striker.

I think if you put almost any other competent striker (regardless of height) up alongside him then he will double his goal tally but I don't see it happening.

To example what I mean, if he did go to somewhere like Leeds I could see him and McCormack being the most potent strike force in the division but if McCormack came here I don't feel as confident that wiould happen. It's all about how the team is set up.

That is not knocking Gus - I love to watch the way we play - but the priority is that we play "the Brighton way" first and foremost. Other teams inevitably set up to get the best out of one or two star players where we set up to maximise the team (and that is exactly what has brought us our success)

It is all about ball retention and risk. Leeds would be happy to get the ball to the two strikers, and hope they score. Gus would not want the ball played to the two strikers unless they had a really good chance of scoring, because of the risk of losing possession. Especially if one was CMS as he tends to lose possession a lot due to his poor technical ability and tendency to "let fly" with lame shots at times.

I expect us to play a tickle more direct in an attacking sense this season, with the players we now have, this does not mean we sacrifice our core values, but we can play faster now i am sure, this can only help CMS..

I was over the moon when we signed him and i still feel the best is to come, some players take an age to settle, lets hope CMS falls into this category.

Pretty accurate post sev!

The way we play, with only 1 striker, means that the guy up front has to have. A great all round game. While cms can run, chase down etc.... He lacks the quality required by the way we play. This doesn't mean he won't score goals in any other team that play a far more direct style with two strikers in tandem. With posh he had a real foil in McLean and that direct style they played meant cms was far more suited to it albeit in a lower division. I don't think any of us want to criticise cms one bit and would love to see him bang in 30 goals this year but unless his 1st touch and finishing drastically improve it ain't gonna happen. IMO of course.
I hope I have the words shoved well and truly down my throat!
