Nobody said they should. I merely suggested that your argument that no regular person would want to be associated with those views, inadvertently defines more than half of the active electorate as being not regular people. Given that the most likely definition for a 'regular' person would probably be something like 'being like the majority of other people,' your statement seems a mathematical, if not a logical fallacy.

The Democrats were down around 4% from last election. Voter turn out was down 5%.

If you look at the numbers in the swing states the number of people voting in those states however rose. Swing states are the best indicator of the regular person with no set political views.

Trump took Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and blue leaning states in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan.

I'd say that's a good indicator the regular person either didn't vote or put Trump into office.

They're worse than Tories. Basically New Labour was Tories in red ties. We've not had a proper left government since Wilson.

I'm not stubborn enough to think we should always vote a left government, just after 40 years since the last one, we need it for a term or two.

People do change over time. I feel I've changed politically over the last ten years but young people like me nearing their thirties are likely to never own a home. We got to have a change to fix that and I don't see the rise in the right as being able to fix that. I liken the rise of Trump and voting got Brexit as a very comparable time to the early 1930s. I fear that we are heading to a time where Muslims are persecuted just like the Jews were in WWII.

I also fear people won't vote for a left government until it's too late, until we've had a devastating global war which millions have people have had to suffer. I don't blame people wanting change, I empathise with them on that. I just really do believe we need a socialist government for the next 10 years. After that? Maybe it will have to go back to conservative.

Voting Leave and voting Trump is likened to the early 1930's.......by that I assume you mean akin to the social and economic environment that spawned the rise of National Socialism. Mass unemployment, worthless currency, starvation, riots, festering resentment from the aftermath of devastating world war, rabid anti-semitism and a country desperate to revive its imperialistic ambitions.

Somebody said something about Labour's national campaign this weekend is an opportunity to disrespect Tories.

Look, while I fundamentally disagree with a lot of them, I do believe we have more in common than which divides us. My MP Huw Merriman for example, supports the NAS petition of helping autistic people like me in to full time work. There are a lot of compassionate conservatives who I will make time and compromise with but I will absolutely not, and never will ever compromise on racism, homophobia, islamophobia, anti-semitism, misogyny and intolerance to disabled people.

It's not about taking opportunities from people, it's about providing everyone with the same equal opportunity.

Farrage is an odious character.

However McDonnell and Corbain are fairly anti Israel, bordering on anti semitic at times. Oh and can be seen as pro IRA, so no better than Farage in many ways.

Oh and this thread is like being back in 2005...
The Irish are humans too. This fear mongering towards siding with the IRA and Palestine is ridiculous. We only just want everyone to live in harmony and peace. Please stop being such an imperialist.

Jeremy Corbyn, hardly sexy is he? As for John McDonell, he is Scotch for heavens sake! Labour would do so much better with that lovely young Gloria del Piero at the helm etc etc.....

Sorry, just thought I would see what politics would be like if it really were as simple as you make out. Far more pleasing in my view.

You are not wrong there

I really don't understand it? These are the people who will abandon disabled people to save money to bail out privatised firms.

Oh and one of these people even gets disability benefits. UKIP and the Tories do not help people who are disabled! They will call them any name under the sun albeit it lazy, workshy scrounger to try and justify their rhetoric.

It breaks my heart to see so many believe the propaganda lies the media spouts out. TRUMP and Farage who are sexists and racists = people call them populist and controversial.

Corbyn? Nah he is "Hard Left". Jesus politics makes me angry in 2016.

I'm afraid I've only got to the end of the 1st page so far, but I've got to say this..

YOU are everything that is wrong with politics. YOU are the reason Trump won, Brexit etc...

All you have said in your post is how awful Trump, May, Farage are etc. That they are racist, sexist etc. You haven't told me who the alternatives are, what makes them so great, what they are going to do, why I should vote for them etc.

You're publicly criticising your own mates because they have different thoughts to you. Congratulations, even I want to vote for Trump, Farage and May now, just to piss off people like you.

So take a bow son, people like you managed to get Trump elected and are the reason we are leaving the UK.

Well I will never be able to persuade you if you have this sentiment. But it's not true, because if it was we would all be dead by now.

I have many Muslim friends and I actually find it insulting you even think that.

I hope I explained myself well enough later on. I appreciate the first post is slightly reactionary but I certainly am not a liberal. I'm one of the young people who voted for them in 2010 and feel utterly betrayed by them.

I also feel a Labour left government will never succeed on just the media alone, basically because much of our media has always been right wing and that Labour governments of the past like Attlee and Wilson only won because they successfully campaigned and debated with voters.

I welcome discussions like this, which is why I wanted to start it. But it's not enough. Labour has to campaign like it never has before in over 40 years, by meeting voters and neighbours in the streets, on their doorsteps.

In an early post on here I explained why I believe we lost to Trump and I do personally think the left is to blame for not voting for Clinton because of her emails. I am left, but I wanted Clinton to win. She wasn't my preferred candidate but I wanted her to win. I totally get you though, there are a lot of people on the Left who didn't. That upset and annoyed me a great deal because I feel like they handed Trump the presidency.

I do feel like we have to make compromises in order to succeed but there is a lot of hope that I have gained since Jeremy arrived on the scene.

I totally respect people who voted for Brexit and Trump, I recognise that most people who did aren't racist but I cannot accept the widespread racist and xenophobic attacks that have happened in the aftermath of both. We're talking people being shouted at to "go home", antisemetic and islamophobic abuse. I utterly condemn that and I hope people who voted for Trump and Brexit do so to.
