[Brighton] Ikea buy Churchill Square and will open City store in old Debenhams

I haven't stepped foot in Churchiil Square for years. Nothing against it, just haven't had a reason to. This won't change even with an IKEA, which I also have no interest in.

Looking forward to seeing what the new Botanist will be like though. Would love to see the whole front of Churchill Square become bars and restaurants.

Great news - anything that brings footfall into (a dying on its' arse since Debenhams closed) Churchill Square is a bonus.

People will come into Brighton to shop at Ikea - fantastic news for all the shops in the centre of town.

Indeed. From a purely selfish perspective it's a shame they didn't also have a look at Eastbourne. We too have a massive old Debenhams store that's been empty for a while and is becoming an eyesore.

Strange location for IKEA, it's normally out of town. Whilst I appreciate there is parking at Churchill Square, you have to re-mortgage the house for 2 hours to do so and you've then got to transport your Sven Goran Ericksen bookcase to the car from the shop.

Anyway, those cheap tea towels are excellent for one use one and done.

If they do it like some elsewhere, they will make a massive load of underground parking under the store.

Unless Ikea have grand plans then this will stop the idea of extending Churchill square to the seafront and replacing the Brighton Centre.

There was lots of talk of the Brighton Centre moving to Black rock with an ice rink etc etc and I had high hopes that this was the start of a realistic push to getting the Albion monorail and or cable car system linking the Station to the important areas of Brighton and Hove including the Amex, Eye, Marina and Fat Boy's Cafe at the lagoon.

I've got some cabinets from there that I've had for 20 years that have survived 6 home moves, still in good nick.

Also got some big pans and trays that have been used to prepare well over 5,000 roast dinners, still in good nick.

In fairness I did by a cheap sofa/ guest bed from them that was crap.

Like anything else, you get what you pay for. Ikea has a choice of both which is why it's popular.
I think BHANC is confusing it with MFI, who did go to the wall.

Eastbourne town centre is dying on its arse isn't it. They should turn the Debenhams complex into flats and stop building those housing estates out in the countryside.

Debenhams had three floors of retail space but apparently suffered badly from having a limited amount of storage space behind the scenes. Presume IKEA can rebuild this a bit if they’ve bought the whole shebang. I’m quite looking forward to it: there’s a real dearth of shops for normal pretty decent home goods in central Brighton, especially for a town with such a big student population.
