I can only suggest a player that I've seen play so that rules out any pre 1970 players. It has to be Gascoigne at his peak. Untouchable.

Yes, agree that drinking did not help him but, the question was " which England player in his prime...." .. no fan of Utd under Fergusson and their arrogance and gamesmanship either.

It's hard to see past Gascoigne. Absolute magnificence at his peak.

However in terms of the current team and what it needs I might go for Scholes or Carrick for central midfield. We need someone there who can run the game. Or, in terms of defense probably Ferdinand.

But for sheer joy and magic it's Gazza.

Edit: we're talking for England, right? If it's Brighton then I'm going with...Gascoigne. Or possibly Shearer. But Gascoigne really.
