If he keeps us up then he deserves the freedom of the city and if we go down then he deserves a contract for getting us to a position where I am saying if and not when. I can also see the team playing for him and I haven't seen a motivated team for such a long time that he must have something going for him. I think the question would be whether he would want to stay - I hope the answer is yes - we need stability not change.

I also loved the breast beating after the final whistle at Colchester - real passion and desire - love it!!

what if it goes wrong after 6 months. We had Wilkins and Adams on long term deals, they both didnt last it out, and had to be compensated. If we offer Slade a long deal and it goes wrong, or he falls out with Knight, then we have another huge bill to foot, as well as finding another new manager.

League 2 has a salary cap too

2 year deals are pretty standard, its not fair to make a manager sit on a year to year contract just because we've f***ed up previously. The club needs stability. He seems to have a lot more passion than our last 3 managers put together and the players seem to want to play for him. If we stay up he has performed a miracle and deserves to be shown some faith by the board. If we go down I agree it should be a years deal though.

Doesn't League 1 have a salary "cap" aswell. Vaugly remember they were only guidlines, don't think there are any penalties for going above it? Might be wrong though.

No.

Not on the basis he has got a hugely underperforming team to actually win a couple of games...

ANY manager worth their salt should be able to lead us to vistory over Yeovil and Hereford. Colchester were POOR and their season basically over.

I think we need a clean sweep. Get rid of the current staff and bring in someone new to galvanise the club.

So if we win all our remaining games which are against teams whose seasons are 'basically over', and thus stay in this division, you still wouldn't keep him on?

Who do you suggest would do a better job? (And we could afford!)

Some days I think exactly that, and other days I think we'd be better off keeping him as we could well end up with someone worse. In other words I'm a bit bi-polar at the moment.

Surely getting an underperforming team to perform is exactly the sign of a decent manager? For example the training ground work with Cox had an obvious effect on his contribution.

One of the dozens of 'quality' candidates Dick Knight mentioned...

Unless of course he was talking shit.

Unless of course he was talking shit.

1. He probably was talking shit.

2. No 'quality candidate' for a league 1 position will re apply for a league 2 position.

This is why I think we should keep Slade. I would only accept getting rid of him for a really exceptional manager. He has seen how the team works and can make educated judgments on the players to keep/get rid of. If a new man came in it's more likely it would be Uncle Dick awarding the contracts.

Dick has IMO an unhealthy obsession with appointing "name" managers - probably the advertising man in him. Slade, at the moment, is earning a contract and building a relationship with the players. To chuck that away so that the board can grab five minutes of headlines would seem only to compound 18 months of poor decision making to me.

If Slade keeps us up then he would have done a tremendous job, and would certainly 'deserve' a new contract from that point of view.

HOWEVER, i really don't think he's the future of BHAFC. Someone on here has said that he has a 'proven record at this level' or words to that effect? Has he really? One great season with Yeovil and then lower and mid-table after that. In my opinion he's a grinder who will take us to mid-table League One at best. We're aiming much higher than that and should definitely shop around in the Summer. It'd be harsh on Slade, but (as far as i know) he hasn't been promised anything and if he keeps us up there'll be plenty of interest and i'm sure he won't be out of work long.

But equally he's worked well with the means of all the clubs he's been at, regardless of success, and as Brighton is probably the biggest club he's been at (certainly with a view to Falmer arriving in 2 years) you would expect him to maximise the potential of the team within the club's means.

I think he should get another year even if we go down, I don't really understand why anyone would want to sack him if he kept us up - surely that was his sole aim when he arrived?
