So all that money people have donated to, say, Cancer Research UK has had no effect on our ability to cure cancer? Rubbish! Survival rates are far higher than they were in the fifties.

I know people who have gone for using various types of cannabis, and various ingestion methods, in order to cure their cancer . One of them used his conjunction with traditional medicine and is in remission, the other two didn't, they eschewed medical care for Cannabis. I'd like to ask them if it was a better way of treating cancer but unfortunately they are both dead.

Scarily - the projection in the Cancer Research article above shows that by 2030 for Men the lifetime risk of getting some form of cancer is 50%!

Indeed. Treatments have moved on massively. The type of radiotherapy that I had for Hodgkins Lymphoma in the mid 80's is now no longer used, as although effective in many cases, the long term damage to the lungs and heart for example can now be avoided by using alternative treatments. Similarly, the chemotherapy regime I had when the Hodgkins returned in the mid 90's has now been modified and is more effective with less long term health effects.

However, the 1 in 3 figure is effectively the number of people who will have had something under that umbrella by the time they died, as determined by full autopsies. In many cases, particularly when people are very old and growth rates are seriously curtailed, it won't have killed them - or have had any impact at all even.

Also true. My father has carcinoid tumours in his intestines but does not receive any treatment and is just monitored regularly as, at 85, he is far more likely to die of something else before the carcinoids kill him, and his quality of life would be severely impacted by any treatment or further surgery.

There was a recently aired episode of Dave Gorman's modern life is goodish in which he took a Finish powerball dishwasher tablet and removed the powerball and showed it to be a red Smartie and people in the audience were ready to believe it. He then said he faked it but it's likely that if shown without the admission of it being faked then it would have spread on the internet and been taken at face value as the truth

People seem all too willing to accept anything that shows others trying to deceive them and getting caught out as they seem to want it to be true (basically what the whole episode was about)
