If the Germans had invaded Britain during WW2 what would the result have been.

Just watching Dads Army on BBC2.

Would they have taken a foothold in the South, and quickly taken the rest of the country? Or would it have been a huge failure that stretched them too much?

They probably would have won on penalties.

There was a war game played out some years ago with the germans landing on the sussex coast. In the scenario played out, they were pinned down and wiped out by heavy artillery behind the downs and bombing from the air.
It was also though that the german invasion barges, being flat bottomed, could be capsized by the wake of a destroyer flotilla running at full speed through the formation.

Great britain was there for the taking unlike russia,he made the wrong choice.

Like we were the force Russia were with their frozen wastes and numbers. I don't think Germany wanted to risk anything in
Operation Sea Lion whatsoever until Russia had capitulated. We would have been around the table the minute that happened .....USA or not I reckon.

Just to add though without air superiority no invasion is a foregone conclusion.

and a chunk of the Royal Navy sacrificing itself to get amongst the landing ships especially wave 2 as the initial German landings would be lightly armed with limited armour

It's not an especially interesting 'what if' because the Germans did try to invade. Only they lost. Air control was the first stage of the battle for Britain. So we know the result. The answer is, Britain would win. Because we did.

I've read that he never wanted to invade (therefore hesitating) & always hoped we'd negotiate a settlement as we were of the same stock. He always rather approved of the British & especially the empire

Germany had a stupidly large army, that was all pretty well trained and equipped, they'd have crushed us if they had gotten here. Presuming that they wouldn't have invaded Russia and finished off the western front instead. That said if our navy 'played a blinder' they wouldn't have gotten much here...

The UK 'lost' over 380k soldiers in that war.
The Germans 'lost' over 5.5 million, 80% of them fighting the Russians.

Wouldn't have made it to london before their supply lines were cut, captured German Generals and British army high command got together on the subject after the war
