Found it:
For the 31 seasons to 1983, our average was 15,600.
For the 7 seasons to 1983, was 20,700.
Not bad for a non-football-hotbed.
And as folklore has it for many clubs, allegedly, for VAT-saving reasons in the Bamber era insiders at the Club said the real gates were a few thousand higher than declared forr many games.
