I have no idea how thing would have turned out, but I am beyond pleased how it did.

I know he is somewhere sitting on millions of pounds and will never have to work again, but if he is any sort of a football person there must be a tinge of regret seeing how things went last season

Don't get me wrong I love De Zerbi, but I think there is a bit of selective memory loss here.

Potter had had a great end to the previous season and a great start to the 22/23 season. There is nothing to sat that we would not continued on that trajectory. It might not have been fun but the results were there and we were at last scoring goals closer to the Xg!
Said it before, will keep saying it. Any Potter 'success' was purely down to the quality of the recruitment

He stumbled across a midfield of Caicedo, Bissouma and Mac Allister. It didn't take a genius to select them together and it's no real surprise the team all of a sudden went on a glorious run. Obviously, he and his team totally transformed the football and fair play to him for that.

The clue is in your first sentence. Even then, he was pretty slow on the uptake. If Potter was still here, he'd still be using, say, Mitoma, as an impact sub. And Enciso, say, wouldn't be even getting a sniff of game time

Of course, but it is harsh on him to not also conclude the same could be said for De Zerbi. It's not fair to measure one on this basis without the other.

But I totally believe De Zerbi is better by the way, but some on here are making out Potter doesn't/didn't have a clue and that clearly is not true.

Well it's arguably not true. Let's see what he does next eh?

His performance at Chelsea supports the opinion. But Chelsea are a basketcase with wild and fundamental problems. It might not be a reasonable sample to judge him on but his Chelsea team had the same problem his Brighton team had. When he left us, the problem was solved almost immediately. Unfortunately for Chelsea, they didn't appoint a top manager to right the ship. They appointed a club ambassador. Maybe if we'd hired Bobby Zamora we'd have not been able to improve things but we didn't, we appointed a football genius.

We'd have been in Europe. Maybe a couple of players who left might have stayed, and a couple more might have joined who didn't. We might have done better in rhe second division (we were always in the hunt for promotion until we taied off in the last few games and finished 8th.)

The last 40 years might have - no, would have - been entirely different. But who knows in what way it might have been different? Beating Leicester to the title at the Goldstone a few years ago......or battliing it out now with Derby and Charlton?

We finished 9th in the 83-84 season. 20 points off the third place side so never really in the hunt for promotion. Our early season form did for us. We lost our first 3 games and only won 3 of the first 11 that season. That left us 16th, we were 14th by Christmas but already 22 points off the top. The second half of the season was a lot better. We lost 4 of our last 14 league games but our slow start meant we could never realistically close the gap.

The 84-85 season we finished 6th just 2 points off promotion but again an indifferent spell between October and December cost us in the end as we won just 3 of 14 games. We lost just one of our last 15 league games that season but too many draws in that spell cost us in the end.

But had he at least started to get there in the end?

Last 15 games, 9 wins, 3 draws, 3 defeats. Goals scored 27.

De Zerbi's first 15 games by comparison. Won 6, drawn 4, lost 5, goals scored 28, the problem wasn't solved "almost immediately!"

Just about a Top 10 finish last season, supplementary question, if he hadn’t gone to Chelsea and Southgate had gone out somewhat dismally in the group stage in Qatar would Potter now be England manager?

Quite conceivably. Although would Potter have taken it? Probably not.

Potter was brought in because we wanted to change the way we play. He did a great job and has built us towards Tony's dream of us being a top 10 side. I think we would've continued to battle around 8th - 12th but maybe with less game time for Mitoma, Ferguson, Colwill, Van Hecke, Steele.

Potter was a great fit at the right time, RDZ has been a brilliant appointment who has developed some real gems in a system that brings us plenty of attention. TB, PB & DW deserve a huge amount of credit for understanding our set up and the missing piece that was required to absorb the departure of Potter

Some of us saw GPs limitations but always got shouted down by those who thought he was some sort of coaching god! If GP was still here we would have no European tour and scored a lot less goals. We would have had quite a few dull games when we should have won and his fans would have spouted on about XG!
The best thing the overrated Brummie did was make us £20 mil and f*** of to Chelsea to prove he was all lot of hype!
