If other teams can break quickly and produce defence splitting passes, why can't we?

Because we go sideways so much and keep the ball the opposition are entrenched deep back in there own half.

That doesn't leave any space for forwards to run on to balls so instead we have to either score a very difficult goal involving getting round the back, crossing and heading which we can't do, or we have to rely on a mistake.

The counter attack for Watford worked because our CBs were on the halfway line and they broke quickly instead of holding on to the ball for ages.

We can't play quick attacking football because our passing and control are not good enough. So many times passes are over or under hit, behind players (hugely frustrating to see) or go straight to the opposition.

Why do some of our attacking players beat a defender, but then immediately turn back into them, or take an extra touch when it's not really necessary, losing the ball?

The one thing we cry out for at the moment is a leader on the pitch. Greer is captain, but does not really give direction or leadership. At the moment I don't think there is a player in the squad capable of this. We need someone who will drive the rest forward.

because we have lost the ability to launch a quick counter attack and have to pussy foot it around at the back giving the opposition plenty of time to get back in numbers to defend

This. When we have the perfect opportunity to counter, we just give it back to Tommy K, or Greer/El-Abd holds onto it for around 8 seconds, then passes it to Bridge/Bruno, then it goes back to where we started.
