More themes to consider:

Songs with countries in the title
Songs with a form of transport in the title (car, lorry, taxi. bicycle, train, plane, boat, motorcycle, etc)
Ten songs with ten different colours in the title (Or alternate with the artists having a colour in their band name)
I have read somewhere that one of the most common words in a song title is crazy - could pick ten of those
Australian artists
Songs in a foreign language
Alcoholic drinks
Songs about water
Songs by comedians
Items of clothing
Focus on a particular year
Play ten songs and guess the artist and year it was released
Eurovision is always a good one
Songs by football clubs - play the song guess the club

I spent a decade setting a music quiz and would often theme my lyrics round and used all of the above at sometime. The thing about themes above is you can search out popular songs that match your theme.

You could just ask some fiendishly difficult music questions such as:

Which 90s band were most frequently compared to another band, whose first hit single had a b-side with a title which sounds exactly like the name of the band in question although it is spelt differently?

(answers on a postcard...)

Songs that were sung or written by actors (Richard Harris, Macarthur Park)

Guest appearances in songs (Kim Basinger, Shake Your Head)

Songs that name check places (Montague Street, Worthing in Leo Sayer's 'Moonlighting')

Famous covers that were more popular than the original (Natalie Imbruglia 'Torn')

British Eurovision songs or bands (Gina G, Cliff Richard)

Guess the number of band members on stage in Earth Wind and Fire (rounded to nearest 10)

Songs from TV programmes (Clannad 'Hooded Man' , Robin of Sherwood, Marti Webb 'Always There' Howards Way)

Tough but fun one I came across was a selection of Michael Jackson quick cuts, you had to name which single the particular whoo-hoo, Owww, Heee-hee or Shamow came from. Take a bit of effort to set it up mind
.

Gave up on Deep Purple years ago - are they (or some sort of bastardised manifestation of Deep Purple) still going? On second thoughts, don't bother - I don't really care.

Myself and a few others host a weekly quiz at our friendly local and one of the customary rounds is the Music Round.

The usual fare offered up is song covers - name the original artist and song title - played through my little blue tooth speaker and the wonder of Spotify - but we have had other themes involving:

Love Songs
TV Themes
Music from the Movies
Songs with the Title not in the Lyrics
Songs with the Title in the last line only.
Guitar Intros
Piano Intros
Samples

With the raft of music aficionados and learned intellectuals that frequent this site, are there any other themes we could use and examples to work off please??

As a twist on “covers” you could do samples instead. Play a song that sampled a well known song and they have to answer what he original song is.

Eg. Kanye West- Good Life = Michael Jackson- P.Y.T

Puff Daddy- Mo Money Mo Problems = Diana Ross- I’m Coming out

Google a website called who sampled it to help you.
