Does anyone still get ice cream vans driving around their area, selling on the streets?

I can remember being a kid and whenever it was sunny you'd hear the sound of the chimes in the street and go running out to get your 99. But I never see them doing it any more, they only seem to be sat up in fixed locations like in the car park on top of Ditchling Beacon, or at events like Albion games, Pride, or Party In The Park.

What's happened to the "Stop me & buy one" routine?? Too many Road Safety campaigns about kids running out from behind them, eyes only on their TwoBall Screwball, and getting hit by a bus?

I need to know

yes we do. every day at about 4.45pm. i give the kids the 50p and then the missus yells because its tea time.

but yes we do and they still sell those luminous green, pink and yellow lolly that are toffee flavoured. they are my favourite. 75p now though, used to be 30p.

screwballs have decreased significantly in size.

And I don't think they have two balls in them any more, only one :lolol:

Is it a Zoom, the coloured lolly you're thinking of? Can't beat a good old fashioned Fab, I always say. None of this posh Magnum stuff, give us a Fab with hundreds & thousands on the top and I'm happy. Or a Sparkle, if you've only got a few pence in the pocket

We've got friends who has told his kids (6, 4 & 1) that when it plays music, it means they've run out of ice cream.

Seems to have done the trick apparently.

We have one occasionally. I used to love them as a child. I used to have a cone with strawberry topping and nuts. If I was really lucky, my mum gave me the extra pence for a 99.

My favourite lolly was a "Happy Face". I used to love going into sweet shops and say to the shopkeeper " Have you got a happy face"

You always got kids whose parents were too mean or too health conscious, and they'd only ever buy them Mini Milk lollies.

Meanwhile I'd be sitting there with a large 99 or a Fab, or a Strawberry Mivvi (can't say that these days without thinking of Vicky Pollard), and looking very superior.

I told my kids the exact same thing. Worked until the eldest was nine

star wars lollies! bet they'd be worth some cash now if people still had any (unlikely I know)

f***ing Ice cream man normally used to have driven off before I could find any money and I'd chase it down the street

We used to have one come round called Uncle John. We all thought he was really our uncle until we were about 7

They always had jokes on the sticks too. Don't think they do that any more.
