i would be amazed if a championship side were not interested.

Leicester and Derby had a look at the end of last season and Barnsley were reported to be interested this week. Nothing seems to have come of any of it so far............................

as an aside - for those who wanted Kevin Phillips to join us - he has damaged a muscle and could be out to Christmas and beyond. Guess injuries don't heal as quickly when you are 37

thomas-moore will be going to rotherham purely because they have f*** all other strikers - if they had have had someone to bear the load rather than relying on le fondre last season, then they could have quite easily gone up automatically

the one man who looked like he might have been able to do it - ryan taylor - was stupidly sent out on loan to exeter, helped them stay up and came back and got two in the play off final. he's done a metatarsal though so wont be playing for some time

it will take over a million to get le fondre as, for once, rotherham dont need to sell as they are ok financially. can't really see gus splashing that amount on a player from a league below, especially if someone like simon cox who has done it at this level before is available for a similar price

Before Wembley he was utter shit though. Exeter sorted him out and gave him confidence, Ronnie has not got a good track record at doing that with younger players.

The criteria that we are only interested in signing Championship and above standard players................OK, with one or two exceptions, but that is the general dictate.

Your not in any position to know what the CRITERIA is though are you. Greer,Battipiedi,Baz,Poke,Barnes,Calderon,Ankergren,Holroyd. all of those are either not proven in the championship or have never played in the championship, so at a technical ability level, what is the criteria, to back up the sweeping statement.

I think this £1m figure has almost turned from heresay to almost fact that Gus is gonna pay that much.

All Gus has said is that he wants a special striker. A really good scout may have spotted a player (abroad for instance) who is convinced the striker will be special, but who may not cost the earth. Type of thing Peter Taylor did for Brian Clough quite regularly.

I cannot see us forking out a million on one player.

A Premiership player will not want to drop 2 leagues

A good Championship player will want to stay in the Championship.

Paying a million for a L2 striker is a massive gamble (with that fee)

Just dont get this Le Fondre love in on this site? Is it just because of the name? Sure he could do very well, but its not a gimme that he will. I think he could cut it in this league but Poyet has already let it be known he is looking to the future and is Le Fondre Champonship level? Thats the big question, it would certainly be a gamble and I think Poyet wants proven striker, at this level and above.

I agree Kev - Whilst his goalscoring record in League 2 is impressive, there are many similar types of players (Luke Beckett comes to mind) who cannot crack higher leagues and but are just good League 2 strikers.

I think too many people probably got carried away by his performances on FM2009!

Many players have their very obvious maximum levels. Rickie Lambert and Grant Holt are League One monsters but wouldn't cut it in the Championship. Rob Hulse and Robert Earnshaw tear up the Championship but get sent back down every time their teams make it to the Premier League.

I'll be interested to see how ALF gets on this season as apart from last year he hasn't done a lot, and certainly not outside the fourth division.

I want to say though that i think all these players are good players, but "Doesn't fit the criteria" statements are ridiculous without anything to back it up.

I don't think the statements are ridiculous...How would it go down if we spent £1million on a League 2 player, only for him to be crap in League 1 and the Championship (if we got promoted!).

Unless a player has proven himself at our current level and has shown a glimpse that he is capable of doing it at a higher one then the "doesn't fit the criteria" definatley would apply to the likes of Le Fondre.

We can't afford to gamble that amount of money on a striker only for them not to cut it.

premiership player will want to play anywhere if he is not one of the 25
championship player would drop down one league if he thought we had a good chance of promotion.....or he might get glued to the bench
we took a massive chance on Bobby Z and remind me whose he playing with this Wednesday.

also peter Ward came from what was then non-league
its all about the player and what you can do with him and I know 1m is a lot of money but if his goals get us up one league playing at Falmer then I'm sure Mr Bloom will think its worth the gamble ...and would you want to bet against that man?

Id be amazed if we spent more than 400k on a top notch striker.

If it's true that we were after Sinclair then we are presumably able to go to 500K as that (plus add-ons) is what Swansea have paid. I agree that talk of paying a million up front seems highly unlikely.
