I thought Wembley has a roof?

For £900m I thought they might have had handcrafted seats carved from the worlds finest Cherrywood, a pitch made from the turf of the Garden of Eden and diamond encrusted toilet seats.

On a side note, you have got to love the state of the pitch. Never mind the quality of the pitch for the National team and the big spending England fans. Lets play some American football and cut it up.

You would have thought with the amount of money they spent on this ground they could have put a roof on it. The pitch is truely shocking.

Withdean last night was in much better nick than the Wembley pitch tonight. And its not been raining THAT much iin London today ???

A lot of the pitch problems are to to the fecking NFL game 3 weeks ago, you can even still see the remains of some of the NFL pitch-markings on the grass.

the american football was three and a half weeks ago, surely wembley have some groundsmen who could do something. not got a tv so can't see how bad it is.

but if it is good enough for croatia to play on and score surely it cannot be that bad. or is it going to be the england camps convenient excuse.

Its a bit cow field - the grid iron side line is about 3 metres in from the football side line (American footbal pitch is much narrower) so there is a distinct brown muddy slippery streak down each side of the pitch...

i cant see it so cant really comment, but football clubs ground share with rugby clubs and manage to keep the surfaces playable. i guess they have better groundstaff than wembley.

There's bits of puddles all over the place. Don't they have drainage? Or a bloke with a big fork? Or did they deliberately leave it like that to give themselves what they assumed would be some sort of advantage?

Maybe - but its not the easiest conditions and time of the year to be regrowing grass!

I heard that they relaid it since - that would have been a better idea!

They couldn't relay it in time for this match - new turf has to bed in and get roots down to the subsoil. If that doesn't happen, you just create a carpet that slips over subsoil like a rug on a polished wood floor.

Wembley has struggled since the very beginning because it was handed over to the groundspeople too late. It wasn't properly bedded in before its first use, and it has never quite got over that.
