BBC, channel 4 then ITV a distant third, mainly for repeats of Poirot and Midusommer Murders (a guilty pleasure). makes me chuckle when people slate the BBC when you consider the alternative.
Always BBC - I hardly ever watched ITV when living in the UK.
Living abroad we only get to see BBC Entertainment, which is not all BBC. I have to say that it is usually pretty obvious which programs are NOT made by the BBC, due to their utter crapness (Above Suspicion being a fine example)
It is good to know that the BBC are still making some excellent series and their quality does not appear to have dropped (Luther, Sherlock, Spooks etc etc).
Exactamondo. I.t.v i find is utter gash. And even the football coverage is crap. I used to think Adrian chiles had a certain innocent charm about him but I just find him irratating now. " and errrrrrrr England errrrr are errrrrrrrr winning errrrrrrrrrr against errrrrrrrzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"
ITV used to have a degree of credibility and produced some good shows but when audience figures started dwindling and the advertisers became scarcer they found themselves in big trouble. Hence the dumbing down to SunTV, money was tight for big money costume dramas and home grown major productions and so they chucked money at dumbed down concepts thet would hopefully prove popular enough to get the advertisers back.
This combined with selling it's heart, soul and integrity turned things around enough to get the coffers filling again and raise just enough cash to start to make the effort to compete in the credible tv field ( Downton ).
The BBC for all its faults IS a national treasure and although it can mess up and make mistakes it can be forgiven for the fantastic diamonds it can produce, think of the quality of the natural history output alone. This Christmas the 3 top programmes for me were Dr Who, Lost Christmas and Sherlock Holmes, slick, well produced, entertaining AND thought provoking.
BBC continues to churn out gems such as Frozen Planet. Add to that the superb radio output (Fighting Talk kills me every week). Their online data is a huge resource and then there is how the Beeb is viewed around the world. Having lived overseas for eight years I was amazed to find how the locals (India and Nigeria) had real affection for Auntie.
I can honestly say I don't even watch a show on ITV. I don't care for the Champions League (until we're in it) so I only ever really dip in when England are playing and I have no choice. Oh yeah! I watched during the egg chasers knees up in New Zealand too.
