That's fair enough but how is anyone going to steal it when it's on a moving train? I'm talking about the 10 minuters as I like to call them, you also get a lot of non-cyclists that like to stand up for 10-15 minutes before they reach their stop, usually if they're next to you in the window seat and getting off at exactly the same place.
I'm certainly not anti-cyclist though, I have 2 bikes of my own.

In other news Scoffers from NSC has banned use of Southern Trains during the Olympics. Not for me the usual commute to Oxford Circus, nope, I manage to negotiate with my boss to "work" from home for the whole period.

I see this about twice a week, I think. Maybe more. It's very common.

No, I'm not suggesting it does not happen and I do not commute. But in all my life I cannot recall a moment on a train when folk cannot
and I find it hard to believe this is an regular issue.
I've commuted for 7 years now and it's bollocks as far as I can see. I have NEVER seen people not be able to get on a train because of a bike. For fucks sake.
This is what I was thinking. I mean, I know they jump red lights and ride on the pavements and I even saw one person the other night without his lights on, but blocking every door and aisle so folk cannot get on board or even sit down once a week seems a little far fetched let alone twice in 7 days.

This whole ban is a bit silly - and i WORK for Southern. Can understand during the day, but it also applies at 5/6AM in the morning. How is there going to be loads of Olympics crowds then ? Also means from next Friday i will having to be asking all people i see using trains with bikes where they are going and then probably telling them they cant take the bike.
Can see why the ban is in place though during the day/evenings, mainline trains are usually rammed north of Gatwick anyway.

Well, if people are taking their bikes at 5/6am they presumably will be returning and I guess that's where the problems would occur.
It takes one bike stowed in the position (designed for bicycles) in front of the 2 flip down seats. That stops 2 people sitting down.
It takes one bicycle (not stowed as above) in an overcrowded carriage to prevent one or 2 people standing up.
I think that explains the logisitics of it.
Fair enough, I'm sure your experience is absolutely the norm and no-one EVER has a bike on a service which is either massively overcrowded or cannot fit enough passengers in at a stop.

You seem to be implying that I'm anti-bike. Wrong, I'm not. I'm merely pointing out that in overcrowded trains people bring do have bikes. This often prevents people from sitting in the flip down seats and takes up room in crowded services.
But you wrote "causes a big problem." How does someone storing a bicycle in the area set aside and designed for them cause a big problem? It doesn't does it.
Hardly a "big problem" is it though? Equally a person with a suitcase takes up more space, as does a parent with a buggy, as does a fat person. Where would you like the line drawn?
