I see southern railways are banning bikes on all services in the Olympics

Just had a mail advising that apart from Brompton fold away bikes, all bikes are banned from 27th July to 9th august on trains from Gatwick....so if you are going from Brighton you will have to get off at Gatwick with your bike and cycle into london.

And that is at all times, just not peak as now.

The ITV4 Tour de France sound engineer, yesterday, rode up The Tourmalet on his Brompton.

I hear they had to do that after some guy called Cavendish tried to buy a ticket from Box Hill to London. it was OK until they found out he had the rest of the team with him as well.

it would be interesting to see what would happen if 500 people turned up with a fold up bike blocking the isles etc if Southern would ban them too.

Have they got a deal with Brompton then? If owned the Dahon Curve D3 I wouldn't be too impressed:

Shut the station down I would imagine, bunch of white flag waving shitters that they are. Anyway, there is probably too much rain on the tracks to run trains at the moment.

As an aside I was in a bicycle shop and spent some time looking at a Brompton; not to buy I must add, I was just fascinated by it. They are items of beauty, quality engineered and hand built apparently. The company has been a huge success and it looks after its staff. A great British success story. More please.

Great idea. They should extend it to banning the bloody things from trains all together. It was ok when they went in the Guard's Van and the sweaty twat riding it stood in there with the thing, but now it is a pain with bloody bikes blocking up the doors/walkways, and the dirty sweaty riders come and plonk themselves down with commuters in nice clothes.

Not Luton! Thank God
I don't mind the Bromptons but there are some "foldable" bikes that are just taking the piss. They are basically just normal bikes with a hinge and take up vast amounts of space. People commutting to London should just bike to the station and then Boris bike it once in town.

As someone who used to take a bike on a train regularly I think fondly of the times when we could take bikes into the guards van. I used to commute from West Worthing to Brighton daily. During periods of nicer weather it was better to take the bike on the train in the morning (to avoid turning up at work all sweaty) and then cycle home in the evening - both getting good exercise and freeing up a seat for my fellow commuters. Haven't been able to do that for years now

I always find the ones that sit there with their helmet STILL ON quite puzzling, or 10 minutes before they arrive at their station they already have their helmet and gloves on and push everyone out of the way so they can stand next to their precious bike.

I don't use the train but I stilll like to stand next to my precious bike. I do this so know one can steal it.

Nah - you've got it the wrong way round. Ban commuters; they're always getting in my way when I take my bike on the train, with their suits, briefcases and air of wish-I-saw-more-of-the-kids glumness.

It's the same on Southeastern trains. They've been mentioning it over the tannoy all week.

I can't wait for the queueing system at St Pancras

They should do this on overcrowded services anyway, Olympics or not. When people can't sit down or get on a train because people have brought bikes with them then that's a big problem as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed. You see we are capable. More manufacturing needed in this country please.
