Why not make tentative enquiries with flooring specialist companies in the Brighton area

I have already, However it is a kinda we need to see your face kinda industry which i am fully aware of. So when i move down i will be pounding the streets in Brighton and the rest of sussex and if needs be south London as a last resort.... I may very well go self employed yet, i have not made my mind up and im waiting to see how things go for the first month.

I think subconsciously many people perceive you as the person in your avataar, which is why you may be getting stick.

An avataar of a soft fluffy kitten would do you no harm at all.

I look more like this dude now :lolol:

.....................is good advice so sign on straight away. Forget the "may have a claim for constructive dismissal" and GET THE CLAIM IN it's easy to complete and based on what you say is well worth pursuing. If they try to fob you off at the jobcentre insist on registering. There are loads of online sites to help and advise on tax credit claims - I find Martin Lewis' site excellent but there are loads of others that are very helpful.

If your wife works for a local authority it may be that her maternity leave payments are "protected" under continuity of employment rules in the same way as her pension if she were to move to another local authority even within the 6 months statutory limit. Not sure so check it out - her union can advise.

Good luck with the move. I hope it all works out for you. It takes a good man in my view to put his family first and you're making the right choices for the right reasons.

just had a quick look online and all of the local authority maternity policies I can find refer only to "returning to local authority employment" and NOT returning to the authority you were working for when you began maternity leave. Indeed some refer specifically to any local authority employment. Subject to checking her contract/employment policies I suspect she may well be able to seek employment with an LA nearer to your new home immediately.

Just to add a bit of balance.

Local Authorities will this year be making masses of people redundant. Some decisions may be based on 'last in first out', so anyone moving to a new job needs to be cautious.

very true and quite right to advise caution, but then so too will the private sector.

one of the significant imbalances between private and public sectors however is that continuity of employment - for example within local government - is sector wide so the calculation of redundancy pay if it came to that would take into account ALL prior local authority service. It is one hell of an advantage for the employee when considering changing jobs even in these difficult times.

that doesnt sound quite right. transfering rights/contract/pensions to another authority is one thing, transfering posts between authorities sounds like too much and very open to abuse on both sides. i think "returning to local authority employment" implies that the employment stays in the same authority, they dont have formal ties to others to be able to offer a post transfer to others.

I think your right as the council the wife works for in or around where i live at the moment are doing major regenerations within the borough, and my wife was taken on 5 years ago because of her background in the new build sector. I doubt Brighton and a few councils around sussex have the same requirements due to the building regulations around there. So getting the same post would be highly unlikely anyway.we will look into it though as i cant hurt to find out.My hunch is no you cant transfer though.

Nice work.

PF - Do you know if it is easy to 'sign off' as being self-employed. I have had to turf in the old job for health reasons.

I am signing on next week, but not sure if I can going by the advice gifted on this thread.

If you were self employed and are calling it a day because of health reasons,You will need a doctors letter etc to explain your reason. I wish you luck fella as i think it will be a long drawn out battle, there feckers by the sounds of it... ! what did you do ? hard labour or sore fingers ?

:lolol: Thanks.

Hard labour. All a bit complicated. I want to volunteer for a while, with a view of getting into charity work, but unsure as to whether that is possible. I am not sure of the JSA terms of seeking employment.

Glad things are working out for you.

sounds kinda what i wanted to do, volunteer work with a view to go into social care/social work. However at 40 and just a history of skilled labour it is a long hard slog, about 4-6 years just to get to what i earned as a skilled labour chap...! the wife soon vetoed that

good luck anyway,in whatever you try fella.

Good on ya. I started off thinking I wanted to make money, but you spend a third of your day working. I want to do something that is satisfying and useful. I want to jump out of bed every morning and I want to go to sleep feeling I have made a difference. Sounds corny, but that is what I want to do.

Various medical conditions seem to make that a bit more difficult. Hey ho, I'll get there eventually.

For exactly the same reasons for the last ten years of my working life I switched from office based education management to working hands-on with young people with learning and behavioural difficulties - - if you want job satisfaction it's worth a look. I was never so happy.
