Yeah, I did laugh at that cartoon in the Telegraph: "The Tories are about to make a huge mistake. Trouble is I don't know which one!" So Giant Douche or Shit Sandwich? (To quote a South Park episode). I do think you have to make a choice, and yes they are both appalling, but I do think Sunak is very very very slightly the lesser of two evils as he at least seems to have a base level of intelligence. Truss, as well as aspiring (and failing) to be a 3rd rate Thatcher, seems to be totally devoid of anything approaching a brain.

I am depressed.

This echoes my thoughts exactly. I don’t think I would agree with anything Sunak would do, but at least he might do it competently.
Truss’s economic plans seem to be supported by one nutcase economist from Cardiff.

What a shit couple of options - either one who is a Silver Spoon boy multi millionaire Eton educated and completely out of touch with the real working men/women on the street, or b) the female gaff ridden equivalent of Boris.

No thanks

Or even Winchester…….

Harsh. He is Defence Committee Chair, and was in Moldova, who happen to be close neighbours of Ukraine.

In a statement, Ellwood said he had been unable to return because of travel issues. He said: “Following my meeting yesterday with the president of Moldova I was unable to secure return travel due to unprecedented disruption both here and in the UK.”

https://www.theguardian.com/politic...loses-tory-whip-after-missing-confidence-vote

From that article:
Other Conservative MPs cancelled foreign trips, left poorly relatives and one MP still attended and voted even though their mother had died that morning, the source said.

I can’t believe that they’re sometimes called the nasty party.

and frankly I don't care which one gets in. Either will be a disaster / embarrassment... and if there is anything like a sensible alternative in the next General Election, I would seriously consider voting for them

I have these options:

1. Just don't bother responding

2. 'Spoil' the ballot paper in some way and send it in as a lame sort of protest

3. Vote for Truss

4. Vote for Sunak

5. Other - please specify

Can I just check that I have got this right ?

You voted for Johnson's Leave campaign at the referendum
You voted for Johnson to become leader of your party
You voted for Johnson's Government to lead the country for 5 years

But you've chosen just now to seek some advice on what to do with your vote ?

It's sweet that a party that does so much to undermine working democracy and the rule of law has a voting process no matter how meaningless.

That said that you have remained a member for so long does suggest an inability to filter misinformation and a willingness to accept whatever bogeyman you are pointed at
Don't vote and make a mental note that if you ever get into one of those strangely common debates about what you'd have done in 30s Germany have the good grace to admit that you wouldn't have done anything and probably wouldn't have noticed, while hoping that you wouldn't actually have been a brownshirt at an early opportunity.

I wish more people could be a bit more honest about their politics. Admitting that the choice is really poor, doesn't make you a labour supporter, or any kind of a leftie, it just acknowledges things could be much better. All politicians are imperfect, it doesn't mean the whole lot of them are a complete waste of time (although there are plenty of examples to prove this case). The cult of Saint Jeremy who only made ideologically perfect decisions, was a great example of political denial.

In the Tory ranks at the moment, it seems to me that most of the sensible voices are ex military types, particularly those who are prepared to speak out against corruption. It would be good to see a few more of these taking a more prominent role in government, but I don't hold out much hope at the moment.

You must vote.

Otherwise your party just becomes more extreme - leaders chosen by a fundamentalist core.

Personally I think Truss would damage the country more than Sunak.

Not my vote though.

5 - Other.

Resign as a member of the party.

After all, you have said either would be "a disaster / embarrassment" so what's the point if you are being given the choice between two huge piles of shit?

Leave the dark side behind. There is no good in either of them.

But if you join a political party and then keep voting to ensure that the party you have joined becomes more radicalised and extreme over a period of years such that it bears no resemblance to the party you joined, it really shouldn't come as that much of a surprise when all you have left is a crap choice of radicalised and extreme politicians, should it ?

Of course there are sensible voices in the Conservative party, but those that are left have been driven a long way from any sort of power for a long time now and I can't see any of them wanting to put their heads above the parapet during this self inflicted shitstorm.

It really isn't a left/right thing

And love the 'Yeah, but what about Jeremy Corbyn' reference - Gold :lolol:

Agree entirely. I voted Sunak as the least worst option, but I have never even been close to voting Conservative in my life.

But whoever wins, I am prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt until they actually get in to number 10. Whatever policies they espouse and say they will maintain, the people doing it might make a difference. There are decent, capable Tories but Johnson only used people loyal to him, many of whom are dim…… to say the least. Seeing Nadine Dorries and Priti Patel replaced would be a start.

Yes it is not just Truss though. It is who she would bring into her cabinet, the likes of Rees-Mogg, Dorries etc. At least with Sunak there should be less incompetence around him. Rishi is the least worst option.

Sadly, I have to agree. The law-breaking, tax-avoiding, green card holding individual who has had primary responsibility for our economic situation over the last 2.5 years is now the least worst option. You really couldn't make it up :shootself

But on the bright side, if Liz wins (as seems likely), Mad Nad for Chancellor, JRM for Home Secretary and Suella as Foreign Secretary, would be f***ing hilarious :lolol:

I honestly don't think I'd leave the house while that cabal of truth twisters were in place.

I see that Truss has got 8 votes so far, but I cant see any posts recommending Titanic vote's for her.

Anyone want to put the case for Truss?

Good choice if you want to make absolutely sure Tories don't win next time.

I would vote Rishi, just because I think he is willing to do what he has to economically.
