I hate Northern Beer

That's not very clear. In fact, it's a complete fudge.

What do you drink up there that's better than whatever is served in Brighton?

-wylam
-mordue
-deuchars(scottish)

to name but 3

which is availabe in pretty much any central newcastle pub

most central brighton pubs only offer harveys as a DECENT beer (and harveys is nowhere NEAR as nice as wylam)

have you been to newcastle then? or more rather lived in both cities?

Careful, questioning Harvey's is not allowed on here...

and bury the thought should someone suggest that ANY beer is better, let alone one in the NORTH

just because you have sampled both thomas, it doesnt mean you are entitled to an opinion in which is better

Actually, I don't like the North much at all. Does that make me a bigot? Back to the point, I spent a night in Birmingham last week (yes I know that's the Midlands and not the North but by the North I literally do mean anywhere north of Watford) and I went to a pub with a dozen real ales (The Wellington I think it was called) and they were all piss poor bordering on undrinkable, 2 other pubs visited proved no better. A night out in Manchester the week before was equally dissapointing on the beer front, how anyone can drink Boddingtons and all those similarly tasteless 'creamy' beers astounds me. I couldn't wait to get back south and have a decent pint of Harveys, Youngs and Fullers.

Also when/if you watch the Jeremy Kyle show, more often than not the people who have problems are from up north. You can tell cos of the accents.

NORTH STAND
next time in manchester pop into corbieres and have a pint of pacific from salford, nice southern style ale (in which i mean they don't drink it ice cold with a creamy head). there's 2 micro brewaries in the city i know of and they are pretty good i think.

One of the micro breweries is the Marble -

Outstanding organic vegan beer and a great selection of lagers.

How anyone could describe Manchester as 'disappointing on the beer front' is beyond me!

Next time try the Marble or one of these -

There is good and bad just about everywhere in the UK (with a couple of exceptions) it's just a case of searching a bit harder than in the past. With High Street pubs now generally churning out chemical lager and fizzy bitter you need to get off the beaten track and find those little oasis that do serve a descent pint.
But the Midlands has traditionally been a Mild stronghold more than your standard bitter.

There are some decent beers oop North but they wreck it when they use those frigging sparkler things to cater to Northeners' liking of frothy beer. Squeezes the taste out of any beer.

Dunno about the beer but the bit in Get Carter where he clicks his fingers at the Geordie barmaid and goes "Oy! In a straight glass" is the reason why Northerners will never be as good as Southerners.

One rule... always drink what the locals drink. Otherwise you end up in the Hell that is keg Tetleys in the Spanish costas. That way madness lies.

My first beer was Harveys and I think it is probably the best I have tasted. When I used to go up North to visit my long dead family, I was introduced to Stones Bitter....it makes vomit taste like honey - horrid stuff. Tetleys was OK until the big boys got hold of it and it bacame another Watneys.

Tadcaster Ale is very nice, especially from Scarboro/Bridlington area and there is an ale from knaresborough which I cant remember its name but it was really creamy.

BTW If you ever get a chance to visit Noth Yorks, Knaresborough is beautiful

I can't understand how Yorkshiremen think that their beer is better than anyone elses, Stones, Websters, Tetleys, John Smiths...most of that lot is worse than drinking your own urine (not that I have tried but it was the easiest comparison). I wouldn't say that the whole of the north is a wasteland when it comes to decent beer, there are a couple of good breweries in Cumbria...Black Sheep takes some beating, was one of my favourite tipples in Edinburgh when I fancied a change from anything brewed by the Caley Brewery...Deuchars IPA...ummmmm.

Yorkshire Beer - Black Sheep - very good.
Cumbria Beer - Jennings - the best

Micro brewers - loads and usually quitre good.

Dont like the trend towards lager coloured bitter though.
