I f***ing hate work

So I'm building Lego with my son at 9.30 this morning and I get a call from work saying I should be in. I argue, and argue and argue some more then go in after threats. I check my emails and find my holiday booking and confirmation of it. But because someone forgot to officially book my day off, I had to work it. And to add insult to injury I have to make up an hour and half for being late today. I had a lovely Christmas but this just ruined it. Left my kids crying on the doorstep this a.m.
Anyone else looking for a new job in the new year.

Any employment I have ever known, any holiday request should it be in a paper request format or e mail request format, even verbal, all types of request do have to be authorised by the relevant person / department, so if you have confirmation of your holiday request, how can your company even dispute the issue? you say somone forgot to officially book the day off, surely that was done by the confirmation? I'm confused can you explain any more about it? also what line of employment are you in?

This. If the company have confirmation you have booked off holiday and it is THEIR ERROR that they have not loaded it into the database I would not be going into work. An employment tribunal would find in your favour based on having a written confirmation of the booked holiday (assuming the person whom the email was from was authourised to book leave).

If you get paid sick pay, do that for the rest of the week.

With all due respect and with the state of the employment market at the moment I would not suggest this is a good idea, whilst I fully understand employment laws abusing any sick pay situation is not advisable in the present climate in my opinion.

Any situation like the OP is in must be dealt with in a sensible way and also within any contracual agreements that have been signed.

We used to submit paper holiday requests now it's all electronic. I have emails from my boss and the central booking facility confirming my holiday had been accepted but they actually forgot to send it through to rotas. Then in December when they were telling us to book the last of our holiday time off, I did so without knowing I was using my Christmas day off yesterday. Perhaps I should have double checked before Christmas but we were told the new system was flawless. My company repair and service medical equipment.
Apologies for the rant, was tired and had a few beers after a shit day.

As a team leader in a large financial organisation, I would fully accept an email confirming your holiday and honour the time off, regardless of the mess it made.

First thing you need to do shirley is make your employer squirm bigtime. If you've got your holiday booking confirmation then that should have been the end of it and you have the moral and legal high ground. What would have happened if you hadn't been available at the other end of the phone when they called? Disciplinary action? As an absolute minimum you should be looking to leave an hour and a half early next time it suits you, say for an Amex evening game? Lay it on really thick, because they've made your kids cry at Christmas, and that is inexcusable.

I might be wrong but.......

Hasn't the OP booked a day off he was not entitled to because he used up his holiday entitlement and consequently his employers have confirmed it because the electronic system failed to pick it up.

Both parties are to blame but these things happen and things like the extra bank holiday this year and xmas closures make keeping track harder but its not rocket science. We had someone swap their holidays for sick days because they had so much time off. It might have solved his problem but we had to work twice as hard on the days he had as sick days because they were unplanned.

If the holiday was accepted and confirmed it's the companies fault, agreed. If he didn't get confirmation that it had been accepted then he was trying to take an unauthorized day off.

The last office that tried this trick (Not where I work now) had the pleasure of addressing their case to my Mrs. They didn't do it again.

Best advice here is to double check all holiday.
