I am thinking of becoming a magistrate...

Only THINKING!!!! But it seems to me that a lot of them are old retired duffers who don't have much of a feel for modern society.

Does anyone know anyone who is one?

Is it rewarding or just a power trip?

Advanatges? Disadvantages?

What do you all think?

my dad used to train all the magistrates in sussex ( no he wasn't one!!) and theres a few names that are jp's. the newsreader whose daughter just died sits on one of the sussex benches (sorry forget her name..)

i'm sure it could do with an injection of young and sensible blood lush!! go for it!

I knew a magistrate in London, he was someone I played bridge with regularly. He was nitpicking, pedantic bastard so I imagine he was well at home.

If he made judgments at the speed with which he played his cards you'd understand why the government wants to speed things up.

If you think that you are up to it and want to bring a more youthful look to the bench then go for it I say.

Who was it said "if you are good enough then you are old enough" (In footballing terms not anything dodgy)?

I would say, go for it, Lush. A colleague at work was a magistrate working in an office 4 days a week and working as a magistrate one day. He thoroughly enjoyed it - he was quite well off though and I am unsure whether it was the seedier side of life which attracted him!

Advantages: no legal training, you could work part time hours, and magistrates should be representative of society as a whole.

Disadvantages: the role is unpaid but you can claim allowances for travelling, subsistence and financial loss.

I know that the BBC have a good website on becoming a magistrate. Good luck - I am sure you would be great.
