I am thinking of becoming a magistrate...

Only THINKING!!!! But it seems to me that a lot of them are old retired duffers who don't have much of a feel for modern society.

Does anyone know anyone who is one?

Is it rewarding or just a power trip?

Advanatges? Disadvantages?

What do you all think?

If it gets you into that exclusive clique whereby you can get away with (nearly) murder, I might have a go myself Lush . . . .what do you need to qualify ? apart from being a little eccentric and a rough grasp of Latin :lolol:

I knew a magistrate in London, he was someone I played bridge with regularly. He was nitpicking, pedantic bastard so I imagine he was well at home.

If he made judgments at the speed with which he played his cards you'd understand why the government wants to speed things up. :)

If you think that you are up to it and want to bring a more youthful look to the bench then go for it I say.

Who was it said "if you are good enough then you are old enough" (In footballing terms not anything dodgy)?

I would say, go for it, Lush. A colleague at work was a magistrate working in an office 4 days a week and working as a magistrate one day. He thoroughly enjoyed it - he was quite well off though and I am unsure whether it was the seedier side of life which attracted him!

Advantages: no legal training, you could work part time hours, and magistrates should be representative of society as a whole.

Disadvantages: the role is unpaid but you can claim allowances for travelling, subsistence and financial loss.

I know that the BBC have a good website on becoming a magistrate. Good luck - I am sure you would be great.
