Steve Coppell is considering using striker Darius Henderson as a solution to Reading's defensive crisis.
Reading are without centre-backs Steve Brown and John Mackie because of knee injuries, and are also about to lose Adie Williams to the Wales squad.
Henderson will play in defence for a reserve-team clash.
Henderson said: "I have been told the manager thinks I can do a job there. I have played in that position before in my career. I prefer playing up front and scoring goals, but I can't score goals from the sidelines.
"If converting to centre-back will win me a place in the team then I am happy to give it a go."
