Why is home advantage such an advantage? Yesterday we made more noise than them , and that's often true - home fans make less noise than away fans on many occasions. So what's the big deal with home and away?

No travelling, pride in the surroundings and defending what's ours and all that, but in reality.

I think three of us in the car going home made more noise than them (and two of the three were asleep)

If Baldock had kept his composure in the early minutes and played a simple, accurate ball across to Murray, we would have taken the lead. This would have changed the game. Cardiff would have been forced to come out of their shell and we would have picked them off. Fine margins.

Yes, you're missing context. It was being used as a way to suggest that drawing away is a good thing. It would be like losing every game at the start of the season and then saying "lose your first 15 games and win your remaining games is a proven formula". Sure, that would get you promoted, so mathematically it's correct, but it's not the right way to go about getting promoted.

It's not a bad way though. Average 2 points a game and a club will almost certainly go up - and there's a value in remaining unbeaten. People tend to talk as if it's always a good idea to go for it and possibly lose in the process - but defeats affect confidence, morale and decision-making in other matches. It might only takes a couple in a row to threaten the stability and self-belief that has been a feature of the team over the past season and a half. Disappointing not to nick the bonus of a win from a below par display at Cardiff but still very much on track.

Away fans noise is more constant or continuous. But if home fans get together, they make much more of a racket: see Brighton vs Sheff Wed, 16th May.
Another advantage of playing at home is knowing the pitch, routine, surroundings, etc.
But, you're right, home advantage really is effective, and it'd be interesting to get closer to understanding why this is the case.

This is who Hughton is. And if we do go up, we're going to have to get very used to his defensive style in the premier league. Ultimately this style of play is what got him sacked at Newcastle and Norwich, and I predict we will have a lot of very impatient fans if history repeats

Yes, we all agree there.

Also agreed. A draw away from home is not a terrible result.

You can either go all out attack, hell for leather, as if you're 2-0 down in a cup game - or you can play it really safe, as if away from home in a second leg with a 1-0 lead. Or, as is normally the case, you can be somewhere in between. And our league games are always in between those extremes, so it's just a case of debating how attacking we should be. While I accept that a draw is ok, I don't think we should be fearful of the odd defeat. We've been playing well for 16 months and losing a game where we were pushing for a win shouldn't harm confidence.

Accepting that we're not good enough to go for the win could easily be worse. Aiming for top 6 is not the same as aiming for top 2. To finish top 2, you need plenty of away wins and sometimes you need to go for it. Being too cautious would see a team draw too many and finish outside the top 2.

Disappointing not to nick the bonus of a win from a below par display at Cardiff but still very much on track.
Yes, agreed. I haven't posted that it's the end of the world that we didn't get the win, I haven't complained of Chris's tactics. I simply correct people when they say that we want to draw our away games (unless it's against a top team). We don't, we want to win them, but of course we accept that draws aren't too bad.

We are 5 points ahead in the promotion places and have lost 2 games, and people are seriously questioning CH's tactics? Really?
Presumably some (not me) are only questioning his tactics for the odd game, not overall?

Yeah it's strange, a 0-0 result away from home is a good performance.
No it isn't (specifically referring to the game against Cardiff). Just ask Chris FFS! He looks at is as points lost.

I agree that his away tactics are on the conservative side but and I used to think he was too conservative but now we have players like Murray and Knockaert that can nick a goal it's pragmatic. He's got a great record in this division and knows what he's doing.

I agree with this totally.
Albion have not got the huge rescourses that Newcastle have, and at the moment we are second behind another 'massive' team.
After listening to Mickey Quinn's guff yesterday morning, about how HE thinks that Newcastle will walk the league.
Probably about right inside his own Talk Sport world, but in reality I think we're doing fine and have already cut the gap to one point against them.
No need for bank of Ashley, when you have the bank of Bloom!!

Has anyone mentioned that we actually scored against Cardiff? If that hadn't been disallowed then everyone would be lauding the brilliant smash and grab away performance, especially against a side who were set up not to get beaten and Hughton's tactics would have been seen as spot on. Fine margins.

And that is the plan. We're not a particularly open side away from home. We make sure we don't concede and hope to get a goal. If we do, then the game opens out a lot anyway. We got the goal against Burton and Wigan for example. On Saturday, as can happen, we didn't but we still didn't lose and that is the main thing.

I also think some teams are playing home games against us like they are the away team. Ipswich and Cardiff come to mind as teams who have sat back against us even when at home.

Well i'm not on first name terms with our manager so maybe you know more than me but I thought he said "it was a missed opportunity", however, he was delighted with the clean sheet. Dale Stephens seemed more upset at the draw and this is my opinion, a draw away from home is OK.
