I seem to remember that all of us were calling for Hyppia to go but TB stuck by him for an embarrassingly long time. Eventually I think Sami walked out, not sacked, and Chris came in to save the club from relegation. That’s how I remember it anyway.
TBH, and (possibly controversially), I quite liked the philosophy Hyppia had. He played wingbacks a good press and passed out from the back. The problem he had was that we didn't have the squad to be able to play the way he wanted and he had no Plan B.

I've often wondered if he was just too ahead of his time for us... Or maybe he was just rubbish?!

There were probably a few contributing factors to Hyypia's reign. including that he probably wasn't the best coach, but he did get stitched up with our recruitment and overall quality of the squad. It included loans of Al-Habsi, Gary Gardner, Leon Best, Joe Bennett, Greg Halford, Mustapha Carayol, Emmanuel Ledesma. And the main squad included Colunga, Agustien, O'Grady, Chicksen, Holla, Mccort, Mackail_Smith, Forster-Caskey, Ince. Its very poor. I think a lot of coaches would have struggled with that squad.

Yeh some of those were signed after he left but generally our recruitment was very poor. Biggest blow was losing Ulloa quite late in the window and just not replacing him and ending up with several strikers who were all essentially support strikers rather than a main man

I imagine a lot of lessons were learnt that year including regarding Hyypia and that type of manager as I think Bloom saw what style of football he wanted at the club but realized that a lot had to happen behind the scenes to make it feasible
