Hughton "not interested" in unfinished business at Newcastle but definitely interested in Albion job. Both of them unfortunately according to his Radio 4 interview.

The Telegraph reported on Sunday that he's been interviewed for the job. I'm hoping that's the only reason his odds have shortened, not through any insider putting on a few squid.

Managed Newcastle, won the Championship first season. Sacked next season with Newacstle 11th in the Premier League. Harsh.

Managed Birmingham, finished 1 point behind top in their Europa League group whilst in the Championship, where they finished 4th.

Managed Norwich, sacked whilst in 17th place, they were eventually relegated. Harsh.

Not a bad record for the three seasons he's managed.

Also, taken from Wikipedia: When Hughton was dismissed as Newcastle manager, Kevin Nolan told The Sun, "Sometimes at clubs, when a manager goes, there will be some players who are pleased to see the back of him ... But everybody liked Chris. He was very popular, not just with the players but everyone who worked for the club.

Nobody said he was a miracle worker? But looking at that team, I'd say he did well to take them to 11th in the Prermier League, especially after being given no money to buy his own players.

The guy has never underachieved as a manager. And that is a good sign.

Obviously, that is an impressive squad. However, it's easy to forget how much turmoil Newcastle were in the season before and I think he did really well to get the squad working for him. Once he'd done that, the quality obviously shined through but Newcastle were a bit of a joke when they went down. He then did a decent job in the Premier League with them and was very unlucky to be sacked. It's easy to write off his spell at Newcastle but some actual context would suggest he did well there.

I don't understand why people feel the need to slag off our potential new manager before he's even started. It's quite sad.

Not you, but certainly every time he's mentioned Marshy (and others) have been slagging him off. Just felt there needs to be a bit of context.

I'm not terribly excited by him but then you have to remember we are Brighton and Hughton is a good, realistic fit. He's done well in this division (and done alright in the Prem too), which is better than a lot of candidates. Some of the candidates bandied about on here are ridiculous - Clement? Rangnick? Ain't gonna happen.

Ditto Nottingham Forest with Stuart Pearce in 1997 and he's not exactly pulling up trees in his second spell either.

Just having an affinity with a club and having the false and immeasurable premise of "passion" is no guarantee of success. Having those attributes are in fact better suited to being a right-hand man, as Jones was under Garcia and Hyypia's tenures.

Yep, and for those who wish to downplay his achievements at Newcastle, take a look at what he did at Birmingham under very difficult circumstances; major financial difficulties following overspending in the top flight, Carson Yeung (need I say anymore), large turnover of playing staff with key players sold, plus a gruelling Europa League campaign in which they did remarkably well. Their fans only have good words to say about him, and how he re-stabilised things following their relegation. Odd that his detractors seem to be completely ignoring this particular spell (and his most recent in this division)?

Could be immaterial, of course, but if the only concerns people are able to put forward are that he's a bit "dull" and "anyone could've gotten that Newcastle side promoted", then he's probably quite a good candidate, given what other options are available (or realistic).
