Young, yes, but you do realise he's got about eight years of coaching experience, right? Which is more than a lot of other people in his position?
Doesn't really matter how many years he has. It's about the level he's managed that.

Im going to reserve any judgement until we have most or all of the following back in the team... Dunk, Pervis, Bart, Pedro, Ferguson, Wieffer, Baleba, Enciso, Gross, and March. We have a glut of young talent in Japan, but a lot of the more experienced players are not there (or not currently fit enough to play).
When you put it like that, it’s very apparent we’re almost waiting for our entire first eleven to make an appearance.

But if your argument is that someone who hasn’t previously managed in the PL shouldn’t be given a manager’s job in the PL, then we’re doomed to Big Sam forever.

Absolutely, it could all go wrong. I inwardly flinch every time our new coach says “guys” but I like the way our attack looks in pre-season, and I’ll forgive the defence being rusty because they haven’t tried defending since Potter left.

If we’re not firing by the second half of the season then I’ll have concerns, but to be writing a new coach off before a competitive match seems harsh.

Having said which, the Shed End thread on the Chelsea vs Celtic friendly is an enjoyable read.

I went to the game today.

First half it looked very much like we were playing in blocks of 2 and 4. Depending on the situation we were set up as 4-4-2, 4-2-4 or 2-4-4.

Second half, no idea, I couldn't work anything out beyond in possession we had 3 at the back.
How many beers did you have at halftime?😂
Seriously though I'm a bit envious. I visited Japan in 1974 (,😳) ...loved it then and I've loved all the video coverage of this trip. Brilliant!

I’ll be honest, I’m really worried about us defensively. We need a couple of additions as a priority and one of those has to be a quality centre half.

As per last season, if we lose Dunk for any period, I feel we are hugely exposed. JPVH is also not the same player without Dunk alongside him and I’m afraid the current back up options we have aren’t good enough.

A right back is also a must, but I think that will be addressed this window.

Bring in another decent midfield option for the seeming outgoing Gilmour then I think we are in really good shape.

The attacking options we have are frightening, we just need to back that up with our defensive options to make sure we get the right balance, without doubt we will be under cosh against the better sides in the PL and with that in mind we need the strength in depth should we incur the same number of injuries as last season. We don’t have that depth in quality defensively IMO.

PS - Jason Steele should be nowhere near our match day squad. I’ll be hugely disappointed if it’s not Verbruggen and Rushworth this season.

Oh man, me too, it’s been on my list for years, I’m an idiot, I really should’ve made the trip for this one. Big opportunity missed! IDIOT!

I thought the same for the first game (missed 1st half today's game) but the commentator kept on about a back 3, didn't look that way to me...

Not going to happen. It'll clearly be Steele in goal with Rushworth on the bench until such time as Verbruggen is back. Then it'll be Verbruggen in goal with Steele reverting to perma-bench and Rushworth, dunno, somewhere else

Nah...look at it positively instead! This video coverage shows what an interesting place it is with very polite people. Choose a time to visit that suits you...Spring or Autumn less hot and humid for example?
Make sure the footie season is on and watch a couple of games, Antlers, Verdy etc and watch some baseball too. Wear a Mitoma or Milner shirt to get nicely mobbed in bars!
There are a couple of NSC guys that live in Japan, ask their advice!
Be sure to travel around a bit... Kyoto, Nara, not only Tokyo.
Plan it well and have a great time 😁🎌

Surely, we don't want Rushworth wasting a season warning the bench. He needs regular football so that he's ready to step in when we inevitably sell Bart in a year or 2.

Interesting.

As best as I could tell, in the second half we had three at the back in possession - Webster, Weir and Offiah. First half Van Hecke and Veltman stayed back in possession with Barco and Moran pushing into midfield.

Inside left (old money)

Who are our strongest front three? If Herzeler plays his preferred 3-4-3, I'd start with Mitoma on the left, Joe Pedro central, and then Minteh /March, when fit, on the right.

Then 4 across the middle. Barco, Wieffer, Baleba or NEW CM, plus NEW right sided defender.

The 3 at the back . New CB. Dunk. Van Hecke/Webster.

A place must be found for him but still can't see where he fits in a 3-4-3- system.
