How on earth would that effect his discipline? ???

Being up top alone, more focus on the striker for both defenders. Lone strikers seem to get a lot more hassle than those playing as a pair, its just the way it is. Its a frustrating role to play, specially if its not the preferred position, no excuse for such a poor record ill give you that, but still.

I guess the theory would be working on his own leads to more pressure, more frustration when things don't go his way, leading to loss of discipline.

I don't know if that is the case, but it is a possible theory.

In rehab
Zamora handled the pressure no problem playing upfront on his own so i don't by that excuse.

additional work rate causing tiredness and frustration etc could be a factor.

Different players have different strengths, and different people have different composure levels. One person's ability to handle a situation doesn't mean everyone can.
