[Football] How to watch football and get more enjoyment out of?

We played intricate one touch football or at least tried to, England did not do that and seldom do, I am struggling to remember games where we looked anywhere near as clueless as what I was watching last night, and that’s without taking into account the quality of players available to Potter in comparison to Southgate.

Potter would 100% have changed things in game last night as he often did and you could generally see the improvement straight away. Perhaps you could tell me when Southgate has done this…just once will do. I am talking about tactical changes not bringing on subs and carrying on the same way.

The hate for Potter from some on here and complete refusal to accept there was anything good about his tenure is quite sad imo. This was happening before he turned into a shit headed Judas too.

TV v Being there is the problem for me.

This is the first tournament I've not gone to since I first started watching England away in 2006, and I feel very detached from it. When you go to these tournaments you kind of get blown away by the whole event and wrapped up in it. It is very exciting and I love it. But sitting down and watching at home I find quite depressing. Not least because live you're generally surrounded by hard core England fans who love their country and want us to do well. Feels like when you watch on telly and discuss the England team with workmates everyone just wants to run the team down. I know they've been disappointing by the way but they are still our team and I struggle with people having a go at them to the same level as they do. When you're out there you don't suffer that, it's just fun fun fun until we go out.

Agree, I’ve never been to a tournament, but I find the watching on TV monotonous, I also find it difficult to watch the game with people who talk a load of shit about the team and tactics, have heard some of the worst takes in football in the pub watching England. Can always get myself up for a game if I’m there in person.

As I’ve got older much more selective about what football I watch. The only games I’ve watched on the box in the past few months have involved the Albion, Crawley and Wrexham. I think I overdosed on football in my early days.

We’ll have to agree to differ, I see very little similarity in how England played last night and Potterball, but quite a few agree with you as I have seen loads of similar comments. I don’t agree and it does irritate me but I’ll leave it there

If a Brighton player is playing at the Euro's i'm tending to focus on them, their movement etc...i find it makes the game more engrossing. I can't help with enjoying watching England as we seem to be playing this low risk possession game reminiscent of Potter at it's worst.

I did this tonight with verty, watched his positioning and so forth. Did well I thought.

Good point and I understand where you’re coming from. Similarly I went to 9 Glastonburys on the trot before I left the UK. Being there is so different to watching at home…which I have tried but just can’t really enjoy.

On TV … follow the ball, but look for passes that could be made, defensive holes that should be plugged.

At games, totally different … the luxury of player watch (the good and bad, but mainly noting the positive missed by TV editors and lazy pundits). For example very early on it was a joy to see Veltman’s exemplary positioning and effectiveness in destroying openings, also how Estupinan/Caicedo/Mac took turns in covering our CB’s.

Just go and watch your local non league or park team with a tinny or pint. That's as much fun as you can have watching footie in this otherwise money obsessed world.

The people mentioning lower league football, I’m not sure what the excitement is. Every time I watched it it’s British hoof football very aggressive all the players scream at each other all the time and boot the football at every opportunity. When I watch football I want to see technical skill.

I think the whole pitch view (as mentioned in a few posts earlier) in a live game often helps you to accept defeat or draws better than watching on TV because you come away with this comprehensive feel for effort and passion. Yes the atmosphere is a part of that, but being able to see off the ball movement is key.

There was a little example of this with yesterday's OG of the day where the main camera view missed it and they had to show from other perspectives. With a wider view you would have just seen that as a disaster waiting to happen.

Not too sure what tech and broadcast can do about this. Probably something, but failing eyesight folk light me might need to have a fairly big screen to fully appreciate.
