Now I'm really missing going to the office. The Griffin on a Friday afternoon/evening....

I want one these for the man cave, but they're so expensive! I used have an old Adders and Ladders, but Line Up is the one....

yeah quite unique that one because you could keep exchanging cash to nudges gamble if nudge win was less than cash then exchange back to cash again. played that in the arcade opposite church in west street. it was always being emptied of tokens!. once it jammed up and every token i put in gave me a credit and the coin came back out. so i kept collecting 20p/40p wins and managed to empty it of nearly 20 quids worth. couldnt gamble past £1 or the tokens would come out and stopped the free play. Imagine being able to do that trick today on the FOBTs. putting in £1 coins getting them back and still getting the credit.!

If you took a carrier bag of coins to a bank theyd refuse. But I cannot see how or why if you had properly bagged coins, which they obviously weigh they would refuse this legal tender if you bank with them. Yeah if you had a 20k in 1ps, but a few hundred pound in correctly bagged coins? Ridiculous if that's the case

come across this before - £1 coins are legal tender in ANY amount so bank cannot refuse. In fact theres an ancient law which still exists which states no one can refuse settlement of a debt in cash. ANyway back to the point. For 10p/20p the tender limit is £5 and for 50ps the tender limit is £10 . doesnt mean banks wont accept higher amounts but they dont have to. i was one of the mugs in my youth who got the crap job of carrying the £20 bags of pennies and £100 bags of 50p to the bank counters....the good old days eh (we actually they werent that good!)

bag them up and pay then into your bank account. If your bank won't take them I suggest you open an account at a reputable one.

finding one with a local branch is the real challenge.

You can pay cash into your bank account at the Post Office. Newhaven doesn't have a single bank left now.

I bank with Santander, and a couple of times each year, take £200 or £300 of £1 and £2 coins in, to pay into a bank account - I save these coins in jars, and then use the money for a long-weekend in London or a European city-break. Mrs Peteinblack does the same.

That said, with the increased reversion to card-only payments in the last year, I have saved very little in coins.

Santander happily take £200 in one go, provided that they are bagged in the correct denominations - the £1 and £2 coins must not be mixed together, and there must be £20 of coins in each bag. All the cashier then has to do is weigh them; it takes them a minute (many years ago they had to count the coins individually, so were understandably more reluctant to accept a large amount).

The banks can refuse if they wish. In this scenario, there is no debt to settle or purchase being made. Simply walking off the street saying 'take all my useless coin that will cost you time and money to handle and store, while I take the notes you need for other transactions' is not an option they will bend over backwards to do free of charge, if at all.

I've just opened our money box of one and two pound coins which was meant for last year's holiday but now the money is full up I need to cash in the coins problem is the last time I took my carrier bag full of coins to the bank they refused them and would only take three money bags full per day
Well that may not seem a problem but I have £600 so I guess a money bag takes £20 a time so that's ten visits to the bank trouble is my bank have closed down and the nearest one is a car drive away which I hardly ever do because I carry out all my banking online,so anyone else had this problem and any ideas of a quick solution.
And just before the clever ones suggest they could take it of my hands etc. Dont bother I want the money

Think the Coinstar machines in supermarkets take 9p for every £1. It is definitely the easiest and most convenient way to change the coins but also the most costly.

Blimey - you'd have to be raving mad to spend 54 quid just for a bit of convenience.

It's no wonder I never had any pound coins in my 20s, 30s and 40s.

I worked for a bank..in roughly 2000 most banks agreed to only accept bulk cash from their own customers. All the OP should need to do is walk in,pay it into their own bank account and then do a withdrawal. No bank will EVER refuse to accept cash. That is their contract with you when you open an account.

And as a side note. Try a post office..
