I do understand where you are comming from, and, in a way do agree with your politics but even fair, non corrupt democratically elected governments are crap at running stuff!

I know why government should take over failing businesses (of any type), but why successful ones? They are , by defention, successful!

If a business (bank) fails, we bail it out, it becomes successful using our money and we let it carry on while we cut our own throats trying to claw back the money we leant it, that's WRONG.

If another business (railways) is privatised for purely ideological reasons and then delivers a service which is five times more expensive (we have the most expensive railway network in the WORLD) and ten times more dangerous (Cf: Hatfield, Potters Bar, etc, etc) in order to make extra profits then that is WRONG too.

There are approximatley 80 graduates applying for every vacancy and as overseas students are on the whole better educated the majority of our students can only be applying to get away from home and/or the pure enjoyment of a boozy and sex filled life.
Only the top qualified students should be admitted so that the taxpayer does not have to pay for the huge number of loans given to those who will never earn the amount necessary to repay their loans

Well under normal circumstances if a business fails the government doesn't bail it out of course, having learned the lessons of trying to prop up crocks like British Leyland etc. (my Dad was a BL Dealer and I know how crap their products were, they deserved to go to the wall).

The problem was that the Banks became 'too big to fail'. They should not be allowed to carry on as they are and I believe that they should be broken up (at least the ones the Government can break up because they are majority shareholders).

I'm intrigued about your position on the mega banks like HSBC who managed to survive without going cap in hand - do you nationalise them as well - can you 'nationalise' a multi-national? Won't they just withdraw their capital and piss off?

By the way as a small business owner (and sole employee so busy oppressing myself) please be assured I have no particular love for the Banks - they have been no help at all to me in the last 3 years and I have survived purely by working my butt off including being on a North Sea Oil Platform at 8 O'Clock at Night rather than being at home having a beer...

attila, i have you marked down as undertstanding more than others, but i will have to highlight again that its the underlying structrual deficit of spending >£100billion than received that we are cutting. the claw back of money for bailing out the banks will come quite easily when they are sold off (cheaply im sure, cant wait for that binfest...)

agree whole heartedly that we shouldn't privatise infrastructure for the sake of it, especially if you have to subsidise it anyway. also the banks or banking should be broken up and regulated (like ensuring the management is qualified to do so) to avoid the problem again.

not sure if it's been mentioned as this is a big thread, but would like to echo my facebook status from this morning.

***** would like to point out to the youth generation that 90 years ago today the first world war ended. An estimated 120,000 british boys who were under 18 but managed to pass for 18 served in the second world war, and were injured or killed in service. Think about that while you watch minority news footage of some twats kicking in windows in Millbank. Hope you appreciate the real hero's.

Haven't read the whole thread but was wondering if the students had decided to take more affirmative action like the French do.

The arse end of Hangleton
Poll tax was scrapped for a scheme took into account the ability to pay.

Not wishing to detract from the subject matter in hand but Council Tax takes no account of ability to pay - in fact it's more unfair than Poll Tax.

I'm not being funny, but what the f*** is the point in bringing that up? its a nice point, and the sentiment is there but so far we've gone from amazing protesters, to a violent group of thugs, to now those who have no respect for the heros of a time before we were all born, doing things we can't even imagine.

No student is going to disrespect the contribution that those men and boys made. Don't need to bring it up.

Have to agree with the above, whilst well intentioned it's not relevant to this issue.

We had around 250 students today respecting the minute's silence and attending a formal gathering at College with the College sky-pilot, so I think the call by mistahclarke for students to respect the sacrifice's made is a bit hollow.

I was dead proud of my lot today.

shortly after i met my future wife (she was a student)she went on a protest march , i cant remember what it was for , but anyhow she came in from college bragging about all the fuss she and her mates made whilst i had been at work laying bricks in the freezing cold ,well it went down like a lead balloon as you can imagine , so i blacked both her f***ing eyes and told her to forget the protests and get a job , she obeyed , did as she was told and has never stopped thanking me ever since , so for all you ungratefull students let this be a lesson

I suspect they will bugger off back to Hong Kong, thus reducing approximately £500 million per year paid in taxes to the exchequer.

One. f***ing. Idiot.

Not the entirety of students in the UK. Don't you dare generalize me to him. I've nothing but utmost respect for those past, present and future service men beause to be willing to keep your cool, and work under those conditions takes more than any degree can teach you.

But, this has nothing to do with yesterday. By all means put tributes on NSC, but putting it on here isn't needed.
