I saw about 10 students being injured (cuts to the head and blows to other areas of the body), and I was only there for an hour or so, so clearly there must have been more injuries. I've no idea why this wasn't covered. I guess because they have walked off and not reported what happened. I'm sure some videos will surface on YouTube.

I did try to take a video of what the police were doing on my phone, but unfortuantely it got broken in the ruckus.

some girl union president from UCL or somewhere who was on bbc breakfast with him this morning made him appear positively statesman-like by comparison. she was hysterical, it really is worth a watch just to see her get totally owned by f***ing bill turnbull and sian williams of all people. she would have got a kicking on richard and judy too.

she was all angry pompous and smart alec-y studenty in the most brilliant way, you couldnt have made her up. i was so intrigued i had to go all internet stalky and look her up.

i am in no hurry to subsidise education for wankers like this.

"Prior to the meeting we decided to write Hands Off Education on the palms of our hands a couple of us wore t-shirts with slogans on them underneath our regular clothes and managed to get past security with them concealed.

When Clegg invited the BBC to do a 3 minute panoramic shot of him looking cosy with students I was able to remove my shirt and tie and expose the message “Remember, Remember, the 3rd of November: The Coalition Government Plot Blows Up Education’. His minders quickly tried to hide my striking t-shirt by surrounding me but I kept moving and waving my palm in the air."

Jesus Christ. An oxygen thief. What a waster. Can we put her up against the wall?

So nothing to do with the glass being broken or things (placards etc.) being thrown around then, it was the police's fault.

Problem is she will be a cabinet minister in 20 years time when people have forgotten what labour are like and vote them in again. This is how they start.

A well argued point and no one can condon the violence. At all. It was unacceptable. I just hope as with the poll tax riots, mob behaviour occasionally does help promote positive policy outcomes.

Yep. Because that will set an interesting precedent won't it? Who can (or can't) use "mob behaviour" to promote outcomes? How about the EDL - surely their mob mentality should promote what they see as a positive policy outcome? Think on...

my heart bleeds for you .

I'm not going to reduce myself to your level, but I think it's clear for all to see who needs a university education in this thread. Unfortunately it's no longer going to be as easily accessible, unless you've got the money of course.

That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is the police were being unnecessarily over-the-top. I know an officer who beat a girl to the ground with his batton has been reported, whether or not anything will come from it though is another matter.

And at times the police were deliberately instigating ruckus when there was no need to.

Once they have finished editing them and recording some nice protest music to go with them. Do you honestly believe that with the massive volume of media there they missed the chance to photo a student or two getting cracked on the head? I imagine the videos will be cropped and modified to give a "Sgt Smellie - Nicola Fisher" point of view - ie it will cut out the bits that show why the police acted the way they did.

rules of engagment in all protesting (or for that matter in west street after kick out time): when the old bill turn up with their happy sticks, remove yourself or risk injury. they have turned out because things are or already have turned ugly and the arent in a position to politly ask you if you are or are not involved.

I can promise you it did happen on multiple occasions. Whether or not you want to believe me is irrelevant. I got smashed on the head with a police shield a couple of times for doing nothing but standing there.

Anyway, I've said what I had to say, but now I've got an essay to do. Let the binfest continue.

I think the comments of some people in this thread is clear evidence of why a university education is necessary, and why the reduction of accessibility is going to be an obvious long-term detriment to society.

Well then ..... here's a clue ..... move away from the riot and you won't get hit with a police shield .... doh !

Clearly I knew the risk involved. That doesn't excuse the actions of certain members of the police, though. Obviously the violence was initiated by the students, but equally the police have to take some responsibility for what happened.

No they bloody don't !!!! It's very simple - protest peacefully and you won't get hit. It a demo turns violent then, as far as I'm concerned, the Police have every right to hit back. In this case, anybody with any common sense would have moved away from the building rather than just standing there. No sympathy from me I'm afraid.
