The gym is tough for many people as it is a fundamental part of their life, and one of the main things which maintains their physical and mental health.

I would like to go, but is does seem contrary to the general flavour of the Government guidance. Definitely feels more likely to spread in a gym than other venues such as cafes which we have been told to stay away from.

At this point, people can make their own call, and - correct me if I am wrong - so far as I know there is no specific Government guidance on gym attendance.

If / when the restrictions ramp up, if we follow what other countries have done - establishments like gyms and restaurants will be required to close and that will be the end of it.

On that basis, a longer term solution will be working out what you can do at home / outdoors. Having some equipment / weights could help, but is not essential.

There are tons of videos on YouTube giving great tutorials on body weight exercises and home workouts in general. Loads more will be appearing now.

Personally, I won’t expect to achieve the progress I could in the gym, but I reckon I can stay in shape. Also I will be ramping up how much time I spend on cardio as running and cycling are going to be my two main reasons for getting outside, as I live in a flat and am working from home. Most people will have some fat they want to lose so this could be a good time to focus on that.

Best of luck to all gym goers. Stay positive and just focus on what you can do, if the gyms shut. We can all still stay healthy and make progress, it will just be different for a time. [emoji1320]

I thought about giving the gym up yesterday, a bit of a wobble. The I reminded myself I am young, fit and healthy. Covid 19 poses very little threat to me and if the vulnerable take advice and self isolate I’m not threat to them.
So I shall continue with my routine as long as things remain open. Gym today followed by a walk and afternoon tea out with friends.
I admit, I wobbled yesterday evening but in the cold light of day, there is no need to isolate for the vast, vast majority of people.
Remember, for the vast majority this poses no threat. If the vulnerable refuse to self isolate there’s not much we can do but get out there, live your life.

While probably not the safest decision ever made it sounds reasonable if the conditions are like you describe them. While I am of the opinion that everything should be shut down asap, having a beer with your friend when its possibly the last time in months or a year... do it. The "stop living because you fear death" thing is unusually valid at this point, but a beer the days before lockdown... yes.
You can buy beer where you buy your toilet rolls you know, and drink it at home, while talking to your mate on the phone or Skype. It's not rocket science (although tbf my attempts to get on Skype so far suggest that it might be!).

Here
I've stopped going to the gym and have suspended my membership. I am replacing it with pilates at home, on-line training exercise at home, walking up on the downs and cycling 4 days per week, at least 10 miles per day.

This is exactly what most people in Italy, France and Spain thought too in the early days - ask them now and they will tell you to seriously follow social distancing because one way or another you and your friends will be responsible for spreading the virus - end result is the tsunami of infected people which WILL swamp the NHS - the whole point of this is the Government is giving very sensible advice to EVERYONE to social distance to mitigate the rate of infection.

Email from Asda today. Only vulnerable people allowed in before 9 a.m. - the fit and healthy asked to wait until 9 before removing all the toilet rolls. Nice idea, I think, but I'm not sure us over 70s are any less infectious than anybody else.

I'm not sure that is the logic. The vulnerable / frail / disabled, risked getting crushed in the carnage of doors opening, and bullied out of the way, so leaving without being able to get what they needed. This way they get a chance before the stampede.

(Although it does risk the morons dragging their elderly relatives out of bed and sending them out to get them more loo rolls for their stash.

Don't see the point now.

Been working from home all week. Just popped in to Crowborough town as I'm getting low on food and I've never seen the place so busy! Went in Morrisons and the cafe was full (mainly old folk). Drove past Waitrose and Lidl and both car parks were chocker. Came up to the Cross and the Wetherspoons had a sign on the door I assumed saying it was shut....nope wet paint! Looking through the windows seems like they are doing a decent trade. Drove through the high street and the bar is open and had several people sat at the bar, social club is open as is the Bricklayers.

**** this I'm going to the pub.....every other ****er seems to be!

As London looks like it will lockdown soon I think I'm gonna go for a few last hurrahs via taxi at a couple of my favourite restaurants. Bit selfish I know.

One word for your mindset - Selfish.

You seem to be missing the point - it doesn’t matter if you are young ish and fit , the more social contact you have , the more chance you will get the virus and spread it to people who may be old or have underlying health care issues and the consequences for these people could be very serious indeed.

We need to get away from this selfish and ignorant us and them mentality. We as a country are all in this together, we have to act responsibly to help the whole country and help prevent unnecessary deaths .

Sorry if I sound like I’m lecturing you but your type of mindset really upsets me .

I'm in a hospital at London Bridge in a small queue to have the virus test. The guy behind me was right on top of me. I said you are supposed to keep your distance. He just laughed. He works in this hospital! [emoji848]
My test was negative, I'm not sure whether to be happy or not.

Why were you given the test out of interest? Isn't the guidance that if you have symptoms, but you're not in any distress to just sit it out at home?

How long was the time from test to result?

You’ll be please to know I’ve cancelled my afternoon tea. Still gonna continue at the gym for as long as it’s open. Why? I’ve just popped out to stock up on contact lens solution and the town and shops are full of old people bobbling about as if it’s a normal day.
So in short, if the old ******** cannot be bothered to isolate and help themselves then I’m not turning my life upside down for their benefit.
Sorry.

The vulnerable (mainly the oldies) haven't been told to isolate yet, so it could be that they are just making the most of the time before they are told to do so, although it does sound as though they're not too hot on social distancing.

Regardless, you can choose to be part of the solution or part of the problem. It's not a tough decision for me to make.

You can only control your behaviour not other people’s. If you are doing the right thing , then you have a clear conscience.

I’m pleased however you have cancelled the tea get together !

I’m not having a pop just trying to spread the message that limiting social interaction is best for everybody and will help limit the damage this terrible virus is causing .

Even if you think you have got it mildly and recover within a week , it can leave longer lasting damage to your lungs even on very fit and young people .

Apart from the gym and a quick run out to get any essentials (most of which I have now anyway) , I’m limiting my outside life to walks on the each and the Downs. Until I’m back at work which is imminent.
Very similar to yourself.
