How much press coverage will Mark Cavendish get?

Well I have just looked on the home page for BBC Sport and the headline is about Choi leading the open golf. Just about sums the interest up of cycling in the UK and the ignorance of the BBC and other big sites.

I think Cavendish a least deserves a place on the front page today. 4 stage wins, when was the last time this happend for a British cyclist?

Is Cavendish on any home page today? Have you seen any info?

I bet you even in the newspapers, his victory will command about 4 lines because of the other shit about Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal.

Never. I agree but cycling has never been as big here as in the rest of Europe.

Chris Boardman got good coverage, but the sport I once loved has done itself no favours over the last few years. I have lost a lot of interest as you don't know if any winner will then be found to be a druggie. Pantani was my hero, god rest his soul, but it was all done through cheating.

In all seriousness though, i'm not a fan of cycling, but have noticed that on te BBC Sport page the news of a Motherwell player being injured for possibly he whole season is above the news of Cavendesh

Its just a fact that some sports dont get any mention when it comes to paper coverage.

Very rarely does darts get a mention which is very strange as it is primarily played by british sportsman.

Cycling, Baseball, Basketball, WWE are all mostly participated in by foreigners and therefore dont get much press.

he'll win bunch sprints but be blown away in the mountains so will lose loads of time and fall down the overall leaderboard. The overall winner may win over the course of 3 weeks but never win a stage.

It happens with all the sprinters.

Its part of the sport - the climbers, time triallists and the climbers - all different riders competing in the same event but with very different objectives

That's for the yellow jersey. Sprinters compete for the Green jersey, of which Cav was 2nd when he withdrew. However, even the green jersey is more geared towards more all-round cyclists (often those that get involved in lots of breakaways), than an out-and-out short distance powerhouse. Tour wins are still an AWESOME achievement though.

In a round about way, yes, I suppose he has been using the Tour de France as part of his training routine. He will now return to the Isle of Man to ride a few criterium races as the perfect preparation before joining the Olympic team later on, rather than dragging himself over the Alps (which would only have ruined his Olympic chances by completely tiring him out). This is a very wise move as his work is essentially done in this years Tour. As it's only his second Tour and it's an Olympic year, it's no disgrace to dip out now having already performed outstandingly and more than justified his place in the Columbia Team.

Next year though he will definitely be seeking the pride of finishing the Tour ( he may just have managed this last year had it not been for several unfortunate crashes )

Superb stage today which I really enjoyed watching live on ITV, Cavendish or no Cavendish. The way CSC wound up the pressure on Cadel Evans made for exciting viewing, and over the next few days things will only get better

Rest day first though, and boy will they need it !
