And that was the highlight of Later...the other night. I wish I was seeing him this week.

He stole the sho on the "Hootannany" or whatever it's called, & that was the 1st time I'd heared of him.

He's playing in Brighton tomorrow, so why am I going to Withers?

I haven't lost anything - because I'm not stupid enough to sell right now.

I bought £750 in shares in 1984.

Those same shares today are worth £9,000.

Yesterday they were worth £9,500.

...And in 5 years' time they'll probably be worth £15,000.

Take the long view.

Using the same NSC "kneejerk-o-meter", I've MADE £350 in the last 30 minutes.

Except I didn't. Because I don't plan to sell for the next 20 years.

I had 2 endowments to pay off the mortgage after a 25 year term but kept them going after paying off our mortgage 8 years ago , with red warning letters estimating I would only get back what I was paying in after they matured as there were no bonuses being added , I cashed them in.

I did something similar. When I took out a mortgage when I moved to this house, the size of it scared me, so being a fliexible marotgage I overpaid every month, then decided to cash in my 2 endowments and used that to pay more off the mortgage, then I cashed in everything else I had, shares, savings etc., and managed to pay my mortgage off in 4 years (I then went on subsequently to borrow against my house again to buy 2 other properties, but that's another story)

I stuck some money in RBoS at lunchtime today. Fortunately it's only money I've gained through "playing" in the market over the last 2 months so don't stand to lose anything even if they go belly up, but I can't resist a gamble.

Lost about £67 (of my £1000 investment) during the afternoon. I expect to lose some more of that tomorrow, judging by the direction of the DJIA.

:annoyed:

I feel sorry for the buggers who need to sell right now. Thankfully I haven't got any shares atm, so ok, but my when I needed to cash in my EMAP shares about five years ago to pay for the legal fees on buying my house, they were the lowest they'd been for a few years. Which was a bit gutting, to say the least.

Still, as you say, if you're not selling them, you're not losing anything. What happens, though, if in 20 years when you do plan to sell them, a similar crisis happens? ???
