[NSC] How much do you spend on SUNGLASSES ?

I bought a lovely pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers from the duty-free in Gatwick on the way to Gran Canaria last year, which cost me £140 (apparently reduced from £180), and they were very much excellent. Sadly, on a drunken wobble home from the pub last autumn, I fell off my bike. Scuffed up my arms, my chin and my eye socket, and then amongst my trauma as I hobbled home, must have left my sunglasses in the gutter. No doubt dutifully scooped up by some deformed degenerate urban pustule who's gums I would not piss on if they were on fire.

Anyhoo. During the festive period, I've had a bit of LUCK on the old accas, creaming in around £268 from Ladbrokes. So I went into BOLLOCKS mode, went down to Sunglass Hut (despite knowing they the biggest rip-off merchants), to have a mince round and buy some new ones. The long and short of it - they had a 50% sale on many brands, so I've sloped off with a pair of Ray-Bans polaroid, priced at £215, but for £107.50. And visually, they really are the biz. Delighted. They're Ferrari (with the logo). And I drive a Honda. But they just "sat right" on my boat, so I went with it.

Being as I was only spending winnings (ie free money), I'd probably have gone up to about £180, but didn't need to due to the January sales.

So I put it to the class. What would, or have, YOU spend on sunglasses ?

I bought two pairs of Oakley Gascan’s when I was in the States and the exchange rate was amazing, this was about 15 years ago, and they’ve served me brilliantly since having looked after them. Think I paid about $150 for both, which worked out then as around £80.

Different times.

I quite like Oakley's, but they're nearly always that wrap-around mirror lense style. Makes me look like a rock-climber. Which I am not.

I paid €5 for a mirrored pair in Torromolinos in 2012, when I'd forgotten my other cheap pair. Brilliant investment and they shield my eyes from the sun....win win
Maybe I'm missing something here, but what is special about a named variety of eye wear? Is it the prestige, or do they give you special powers or summit????

I am not ashamed of my Honda sir. She is my pride and joy.
If Sunglass Hut did Honda sunglasses, I'd be all over that like Huw Edwards on an intern.
I hope I haven't inspired you this evening into the sort of florid allusion you may regret in the morning. ???

Ray Bans. I'd have paid £50 but I find they no longer fit on my head.
It has enlarged owing the the muscle that overlays it having expanded to accommodate the increasing abundance of my lovely thoughts.

What?

Prescription Wayfarer Ray Bans - £ 245 in 2018 - for everyday use
Christian Dior - 1960s John Lennon style turquoise lens glasses (Charity shop - £1 in 2001)
Yves St Lauren classic tortoise shell - New £120 (20 years ago)
Chanel black lens classic - New £225 (2016) - left in a dressing room in a shop a month later and nicked within minutes.

Several pairs of really cheap reflective aviators for birdwatching.

I should add I rarely buy new clothes and when I do, they are usually second hand and I only have 2 watches 😎

Mine enable me to ogle various passing strumpets whilst supposedly looking in a vaguely different direction.

I have a couple of pairs of nice sunglasses:

Tour de France branded Oakleys which I bought from Gatwick duty free for about £120 around 12 years ago. They're the only sunglasses I use for cycling, the vented lenses are great to stop them misting up. I often wear them for running in the winter too. I bought some replacement lenses* a couple of years ago for about CA$50.

Ray Ban Wayfarers I bought in a sale for around CA$200 (£120ish) a couple of years ago. These are my every day, nice sunglasses.

I also have a few pairs of Goodrs, which used to be CA$25 but the price has crept up to CA$35. It's very much a running brand and I even have a couple of race themed ones.

* just a note on lenses - the UV protection does wear out after a while, especially on cheaper sunglasses.

Good question. I have just over 20 pairs in total. The brands are Oakley, Prada, Rayban and D&G. Most was one of the D&Gs which was 400 something euros.

What?
Your ever-expanding cranium is why you must NEVER buy sunglasses online. Much like me, you'll never get a pair that quite fits.

Either that, or stop reading books.

I have a couple of pairs of cheapo glasses I wear around the beach, going swimming etc...

But I have a pair of very nice Ray Bans and a pair of Police sunglasses and the quality is so different. Like comparing Trotters Plastic Pig to a Lamborghini Murcielago and saying they are both cars. Bought them over 15 years ago so haven't a clue how much I paid for them. I don't wear them enough because I'm afraid to lose or break them so they only come out for holidays etc....

Ha ha. I bought my first “decent” pair around 30 years ago and have topped up most years but have never got rid of any.

They range from sports glasses (obvs Oakley), to classic Raybans (I have 3 pairs of aviators plus others), to big black f*** off and leave me alone I’m having my lunch in Ibiza designer glasses to light tint evening shades.

I might get them all out tomorrow and photograph them.
